It poured a dark reddish brown color with a thin white head that leaves nice rings of lace behind on the glass. The aroma has a sweet malty nose with some mild hop notes. Its flavor has a creamy smooth malt character that is fairly sweet with some caramel notes and mild hops for balance. The carbonation is very mild making the texture creamy smooth. It has a medium body with a thin balanced finish. Overall it’s a very drinkable beer with a good body and flavor although not quite as deep as I would like to see. Still it’s very drinkable.

| 2.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 2/5 | 6/10 | 2/5 | 11/20 | Jul 2, 2008 Pours a ruby red with a small loosely-bubbled head with no retention. Aroma is stale and buttery. Tastes of light toast, diacetyl, banana esthers, digestive cookie, bland and boring. Tastes more like a dunkel than an Irish ale - the diacetyl is pretty bad. Carbonation is nearly nil, body is thin. Bo-ring. EricE (471), Fairfax, Virginia, USA

Malty aroma with hints of chocolate and toffee and yeast. Bland flavor - some nutty malts and a touch of hops. arventresca (343), Greenville, North Carolina, USA

It has notes of hops, toffee, and brown sugar. There is something oddly Sean Connery-esque about the slightly bland, but oddly satisfying taste of this ale. It is up to you to decide if you will be that guy who orders Smithwick’s at an Irish-themed bar. I generally am. Underhook (162), Lincoln Park, New Jersey, USA

Pours very dark black with a good amount of head. Smells sweet, a bit of clove, very roasty. Very easy to drink. Dark, sweet caramel taste. Very malty, a little bit of hoppiness but not very noticeable. A little watery, but the Irish should be proud, this is a fantastic effort.
