4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Berley31 (230) - New Brunswick, CANADA - NOV 14, 2009
A: Poured from a 440 mL can... head is average-sized and off-white, and diminished to 1/2-finger size or so. Body is a nice dark, ruby color and completely clear. Not many bubbles through the beer at all.
S: Aroma is of average malt, with hints of caramel sweetness coming through.
T: Nice flavor that starts sweet and ends sweet... the caramel is still here. While overall it’s quite a sweet beer, it definitely isn’t overwhelming or sickening.
M: Medium-to-full bodied with a very creamy texture, and soft carbonation.
D: May not be the Irish Red with the most personality available, but I found it pretty solid across the board, and quite easy to drink.
1.7 AROMA 2/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 5/20 pkbites (478) - Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA - NOV 7, 2009
Pours a lovely cola brown with a reddish hue. Creamy beige head lasts the duration with some nice lacing. Aroma is disappointing with only a slight hint of fresh cookie dough. Burnt grain flavor with a watery finish and not much aftertaste. A good looker but not much else. Rather weak for an Irish ale, but not offensive.
3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 Elwood (1834) - Between a rock and a hard place, Virginia, USA - NOV 7, 2009
Serving: Draft.
Appearance: Deep amber color with a creamy, off-white head. Nice head retention and decent lacing.
Aroma: Malty nose with notes of biscuit, caramel, and a bit of grain.
Flavor: Sweet malt notes, a bit of caramel, toast, and a bit of an earthy metallic note.
Palate: Medium-low carbonation with a medium mouthfeel and a medium-short, sweet finish.
Overall: A solid go to if there is nothing better. It won’t wow you, but it rarely disappoints either. Take it or leave it.
3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 dmac (2509) - Toms River, New Jersey, USA - OCT 28, 2009
Draft and bottle multiple times. Pours a deep amber brown body with an average size off white head. Flavor is malty with lots of bready grains, a slight touch sweetness mostly molassess. Solid sessionable beer that I still can’t believe I never rated even though I have been drinking this for years even had a shitload of them in Ireland.
3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 kramer (3376) - Sunbury, Pennsylvania, USA - OCT 24, 2009
Draft pint. Pours a clear dark amber body with a reddish hue under a small creamy off-white head. Pretty nice retention. The nose is lightly toasty malt, a little grainy with a touch of caramel. Sweet slightly grainy flavor, a little toasty, thin caramel up front. Finishes with some Ale fruitiness and a light bitterness. Watery texture with a bit of course graininess on the finish. Moderate fizzy carbonation. OK for the occasional pint when there’s not much else to choose from.
3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 dionysus (1257) - Arizona, USA - OCT 19, 2009
Bottle pours red-brown with an off-white head. Aroma is peanut brittle and molasses. Taste starts with sweet caramel, followed by roasted nuts, and finishes up on an earthy hop note. Good way to start off any Irish holiday.
3.5 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20 Jojo78 (4) - USA - OCT 15, 2009 does not count
Beatiful irish ale and alternative to Guiness. Hearty enough to enjoy, not too much to enjoy a few. Complex finish due to compination of hops and malted barley unique to this brewery, but a consistent, refined taste. Love it!
2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20 DrSamPHD (65) - Baton Rouge, Louisiana, USA - OCT 14, 2009
Dark brown, semi-transparent beer with a medium off white head. Somewhat frothy head. Aroma is of nut and hops, with bits of yeast coming through. The flavor is sweet with hints of malt, and caramel. Interesting almond flavor on the back end. With a heavier body, this beer would be grade: A.
