In 1998 a new enhanced draught product with improved head retention was launched along with redesigned glassware.

Draught at Emeralds Loop. Poured dark black brown with cream beige head. Aroma of roasted malts oatmeal. Light carb med bod. Roasty malty taste.

An Irish red, but not a very good one. Pretty watery, the best about it is its color. Classic label, though, rather nice.

Dark pouring & easy drinking ale with a very smooth texture & taste. This is one of those beers you can drink throughout the day or night and never get tired of. Excellent drinkability & stays interesting.

Very nice looking beer but lacks a bit in the taste and aroma. Could have been a bit more "heavy".

Nice pour, creamy thick head. All else lacking, kind of weak and watery, unimpressive, tasteless

12 ounce bottle poured into a brandy snifter. Pours a dark amber color with a beige head of foam. Good retention. The aroma has toasted bread, malt, a subtle sweetness. The taste is pretty well balanced with a touch more malty sweetness than bitterness. I get a fruity, caramelly sweetness throughout. Medium body and moderate carbonation. Not a bad beer, really. I am enjoying it much more than I do regular Guinness, which I think is a reasonable comparison to make even though they are completely different beers.

Reviewed in 2009. Pours a clear copper with a fiery hue topped by a finger or so of off-white frothy head. Retention is moderate, as is carbonation. Some chunky lacing is spotted. The nose is nutty and roasted malts with a herbal hops backbone. The taste is very nutty and roasted with the malts at the forefront. The hops do come through with a sharp and herbal features. Mouthfeel is on the medium-low mark and the finish is ok. What makes this ale interesting are the roasted elements which are very satisfying. Cheers!

Had it on tap. Didn’t really have a distinct smell. Felt a bit watered down.

Nicht besonders intensiv im Geschmack, aber sehr süffig. Schöne Schaumkrone und tolle Farbe!

The best Irish Red Ale I’ve had. Lots of roasty, sweetness. Tons of malt and barley. The color is really awesome. As far as big beers go, this one is actually really good. There is a ton of flavor and big roastiness to keep it interesting

Smithwick's Irish ale tastes like an average beer to me. It does not seem to be especially different from some U. S. Beers, and I was somewhat disappointed. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
