Smithwick’s is Ireland’s number one ale. Its exceptional taste, distinctive colour and purity of ingredients make it unique. Its rich, satisfying taste has earned it five gold medals in the famous Monde Selection Beer Tasting Competition. Smithwick’s is produced using the finest hops and special roasted, malted barley. In 1998 a new enhanced draught product with improved head retention was launched along with redesigned glassware.

A very different beer, as one reviewer states "it will be put hair on your chest. The first sip is very bitter but it gets smoother and cleaner as the drink goes. It has a very unique flavor to it, almost a little scottish.

Aroma - bread, toast Appearance - dark red, clear with a frothy tan head, about 1/2 inch Taste - Slightly sweet Palate - medium body, smooth texture, flat, bitter finish Overall - A very drinkable beer. Has a not too complex taste followed by nice hoppy finish. Low abv provides for a great session beer.

11.2 oz. bottle pours a clear reddish brown with a moderate and lasting off-white head. Aroma is full of caramel and roasted malts, with some bread. Taste is slightly sweet with a grassy aftertaste that made me think of Germany instead of Ireland., Body is medium with slight carbonation and a smooth creamy mouthfeel. There’s nothing wrong with this one, but it didn’t wow me.

Better than the harp but lacks real flavor...a taste malt and not much else...looks great in my glass but lacks in quality.

Alla spina. Ambrato scarico, poca schiuma, un accenno di nocciole, malto e caramello. Povera, scarna, acquosa, ma quantomeno dissetante e non fastidiosa.

Pours a Coke like body with a medium dense head. Almost no aroma. Nice and malty taste. Nice and fresh! ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

On tap at Keegan’s in a pint glass. Caramel and brown in color with tannish head. Malty aroma with some nutty characteristics and subtle sweetness. Taste has qualities of caramel and toffee with a little bit of sweetness. Very thin mouthfeel. It’s still a good fallback option if you’re at an Irish establishment and they are out of Harp. Nothing to write home about.

Originally rated on 2/6/08- I consider smithwicks to be a good beer because its very well balanced, not overpowering in anyway in regard to flavor, smell, mouthfeel, ect without being watery . This is a good beer for people who dont drink much or have limited backgound in dark beers. Worth a try.

Pre-pour notes. As I opened the bottle, the aroma from the aroma very clear. Very nice.

Aroma is nutty and roasted malt. It’s bready, ap I don’t know if that’s yeast or malts. But it’s very tasty.

Mouthfeel is pretty thin. It’s light, and crisp. It’s super drinkable. It has a little Guiness creaminess in there.

Overall, this is very good. I’m pleasantly surprised. I expected much less, and boy was I surprised. Certainly, this is a must try. Red ales, are not my favorite, but I could be persuaded otherwise with ales like this. Do try this. I’m glad I did.
