3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
Smithwick’s Pale Ale has a very thick, fluffy, off-white head, a cloudy, sediment-rich, bubbly, golden appearance, with lots of rather heavy lacing left behind. The aroma is of semi-sweet, bready malt and subdued citrus. Taste is of those elements, with hops that come across as a sort of cellar mold, something common with English/Irish ales, I’ve noticed. Mouthfeel is light and watery, and Smithwick’s Pale Ale finishes fairly crisp and highly drinkable. RJT

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Can. Golden and looking like a macro, this actually turned out to be a sturdy, even-keeled beer, if a bit "regular." There’s a mild aspect of, well ... everything ... Well balanced an quite drinkable. Pleasantly surprised. (#5587, 7/25/2014)

2.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Can at Fado. Poured in a Smithwick glass. Very slightly hazy medium-dark amber pour. Heavy carbonation. Not much aroma. Reasonably full golden ale with some amber fruit, toasted grains, and a modest hop bite. Does not feel like a typical Pale Ale at ale. Has some nice elements but feels too much like a beer crafted by committee.

2.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20
The hop character of this beer surprised me. I would normally expect given the style and the St. Jame’s Gate origin, the hop character would be subtle to non-existent. In this case though it is a decent amount of citrus and pine, very much like an American pale. It is a nice clear orange color w/ a foamy and long lasting head. After the initial surprise from the aroma hops, the beers character becomes a bit more subdues and earthy. There is a bit of a plaster note as well as some astringency. This has low carbonation but neither much bitterness nor malt character so it comes off as a bit watery. I think I might call this an ordinary bitter stylistically, despite that touch of American hop character. It is not a terrible beer but isn’t exactly extremely flavorful or subtle so I will probably be passing on this in the future.

2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Cerealy aroma with slightly piney, slightly fruity hops in the background. Carbonation is medium and the body is medium to light. The taste is medium bitter, with the grainy malts making the biggest impression.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Can. Light golden amber color with a foamy white head that dissipates quickly. Light aroma of hops and grassy malt. Taste is light citrus and slightly herbal hops. A brisk tingle of carbonation and a finish of dry herbal hops round it out. It’s a bit lighter on the hops than I expected for a pale ale but actually pretty decent.
