3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Draft at Tustin Brewing. Marked as the "2010" version. Pours a cola brown with minimal white to tan head. Aroma is caramel, oak chips, acorns (odd) and some vanilla. Taste was a very well rounded caramel, barrel, malty balanced barley wine. No hops. Nice barley wine but couldnít really deal with it on a 90 degree November afternoon.

Tap sample. Poured hazy reddish brown color with an average frothy brown head that mostly lasted with good lacing. Moderate to heavy dark fruit, toasted malt, alcohol and wood aroma. Medium to full body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. Moderate to heavy fruit bittersweet flavor with a medium to heavy dark bittersweet finish of moderate to long duration. This is a complex standout beer.

18-Jan-11 (Draft: Tustin Brewing Co. in Tustin, CA) I sampled this beer at the recent Barrel Blast festival at Pizza Port Carlsbad, and liked it, but at the brewpub, in a non-festival setting where attention can more easily be paid to details, this beer is superb. The nose is bourbon, vanilla, coconut, dried apricot, toffee, caramel, and almond paste, and though the barrel characteristics are quite prominent, they donít overpower the fruity and malty features of the base beer, and the beer does not smell boozy. Highly aromatic and enticing, itís a beer I could sit here and sniff all day. On the palate, the beer is medium-high in sweetness and is quite fruity, with flavors of raisins, figs, prunes, and dried apricots (which provide a touch of balancing tartness). Itís also very malty as one would expect from a barley wine, with flavors of caramel and toffee. The bourbon flavor is light, but the coconut and vanilla show a bit more prominence, yet remaining balanced against the fruit and malt flavors. Itís fairly sweet, but itís malty rather than sugary and is not cloying. In fact, there is a nice dryness in the finish that partners with the slight acidity to create a very drinkable barley wine. The beer is full bodied on the palate with medium-minus carbonation and no boozy burn at all. Medium-brown in color and fully transparent, but the wispy head dissipates before the color could be ascertained. No lacing, obviously. Overall, this is very well done. The bourbon barrel effects are perfect, allowing the base beer to shine. And itís not too sweet like many bourbon versions of sweet, malty beers. Definitely a beer worth seeking out if youíre in Orange County.

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Dark amber pour, with transparency indeed, and little to no head. Sweet, somewhat vegital nose with some bourbon fumes and candyish hop resin notes. Clean, bourbon-influenced flavors with some caramelized sugar sweetness riding along in the background. Some vanilla from the bourbon as well. Overall, pretty straight forward but clean and for the most part, focused. Nothing mind blowing though.

A: The pour is a dark amber color, bordering on mahogany with a fingerís worth of slightly off-white head.
S: Wow, the nose on this beer is phenomenal. Tons of vanilla, bourbon, maple syrup, brown sugar, caramel, and toffee provide a wonderful sweetness. Some miscellaneous dark fruit notes and chocolate fill in the background of the aroma.
T: The flavor is similarly impressive. Lots of sweet, rich vanilla, bourbon, and oak accompanied by toffee, caramel, brown sugar, maple syrup. The finish is all the prevents this from a perfect score as there is a bit of alcohol and heat, along with some hints of chocolate.
M: The mouthfeel is smooth, creamy, rich, and full bodied. A light but nearly perfect level of carbonation.
D: I was told this beer was good, but I had to see for myself. This is one of, if not the, best barrel aged barleywines Iíve come across. I might go back again soon to have some more.
