3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle at De Garde, pours a hazy dark amber / chestnut brown with a small beige head. Aroma brings out pungent toasted hazelnuts, piney hops and bready nutty notes. Flavour brings out loads of toasted nuts upfront, loads of resinous and piney hops, and caramel oaky notes. Really cohesive and complex. Excellent stuff.

1.9 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 6/20
26-Nov-14 (500-ml bottle: Purchased 26-Nov-14 for $5.69 at The Bine & Vine Bottle Shop in San Diego, CA)
This beer pours a hazy, amber body and an inch of pale-tan head that settles to a thin sheet and ring that leaves dense, doily-like lacing on the glass. The nose is noticeably hoppy, but it’s a green, plant-like hoppiness like crushed garden weeds and sharp pine with a background of dry, vaguely toasty, mildly caramely malts. On the palate, the weedy, "green" hops are prominently on display with a long, lingering, sharp bitterness and a soapy finish. The malts have a dry, slightly toasty flavor but not really much caramely character, but the aftertaste is just like chewing on plants. The beer is medium in weight, medium in carbonation, and abrasive and astringent on the tongue. Overall, I hate these kinds of beers where the hop bitterness is this abrasive and "green". Smog City calls this a "balanced" Amber Ale, but there’s nothing balanced about this beer. It’s hopped like an aggressive IPA, and with the malt character, this tastes much more like a standard over-hopped Red Ale.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
500 ml bottle. (Texas Wine & Spirits) Carlsbad, CA.
Clear amber colour with a small off-white head.
Strong resiny hops, sweetness, bitterness and some caramel malt in the aroma. The flavour is resiny and piney hops, moderate bitterness and lots of caramel malty sweetness. Quite balanced and nice for an Amber Ale. That style is not my favourite.
