COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Stone Brewing Co (Escondido, CA) and Smuttynose Brewing Company (Portsmouth, NH) have teamed up to create just 30 barrels (930 gallons) of Custer’s Last Stand. Stone’s founder Greg Koch joined Smutty in the brew process in New Hampshire, where they made – don’t be surprised – an IPA. Not just any IPA though, a “right-after-Prohibition Ballantine IPA” as mentioned in Stone’s Mitch Steele’s book on IPAs.

Bottle 472/1044 .. . a rather unique feeling beer .. . hazed gold .. great foam aspects .. . yeast, straw, bisciut, and mild grassy hops .. . light mouth, quick grimey finish .. . not bad but lacks complexity .. . . how fast can you throw?

Appearance: Pours amber gold, think white cap of white, leaving behind tremendous lacing.

Aroma: Pine, grapefruit essence, apricot preserves.

Taste: A nice mouthful of piney American hops. Some fruitiness. Subtly sweet malt and toasted malts. Finishes with earthy bitterness.

Mouthfeel: Full bodied, average carbonation.

Overall: For not being my preferred type of IPA, this is very tasty and very fresh. Not many people outside of Portsmouth Brewing got to try batch 1 last year, so I am very glad they did this beer on a slightly larger run.

Keg @ Beer Run. Medium amber pour with a small head. The nose is strong marmalade, orange. Toast. Burnt caramel sweetness. The taste is moderately bitter, quite sweet. Earthy hops, somewhat woody. More marmalade. A bit hot in the finish. Full body, fine carbonation. Fine, not that memorable.

Draft @ Three Penny Taproom. Deep hazy gold in color thick frothy head. Nose is floral, pine and citrus notes. Taste starts with pine then the bready malt makes itself known. The pine comes through in the finish with hints of passion fruit. The bitterness is slightly lingering and light resin. Dry texture. Pretty decent.
