Stone Brewing Co (Escondido, CA) and Smuttynose Brewing Company (Portsmouth, NH) have teamed up to create just 30 barrels (930 gallons) of Custer’s Last Stand. Stone’s founder Greg Koch joined Smutty in the brew process in New Hampshire, where they made – don’t be surprised – an IPA. Not just any IPA though, a “right-after-Prohibition Ballantine IPA” as mentioned in Stone’s Mitch Steele’s book on IPAs.

Bottle. Poured hazy copper color with a large frothy white head that lasted with very good lacing. Moderate to heavy earthy hop and small sweet malt aroma. Medium body with a slick texture and soft carbonation. Moderate to heavy bittersweet flavor with a moderate to heavy bittersweet finish of medium duration. This a solid brew.

From a 650ml bomber. Pours a rusty Amber with light, fluffy but dissipating head. Nose of grapefruit and light pine, but not too in your face. This is an IPA not of the "I can add more hops than you" school, just rich and tasty. Light bodied on the palate but with a strong hop hook that is well imbalance with strong malts. Finished with a very mild hop kick that keeps this thing drinkable. A win. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle at home from Cotteridge Wines
Big brash resinous piney bitterness, full bodied, not massive pithyness, herbal but not tropical, easy drinking for its strength, sticky pineapple and sage, moderate carbonation.

glennmastrange (2359) - hobe sound, Florida, USA - FEB 16, 2015
Bottle. Moderate light bread, grain and caramel for the malt, light herbs and dough for the hops and yeast, with a hint a hint of honey. Head is small, frothy, white with fair lacing and is mostly diminishing. Color is hazy, medium amber. Flavor starts lightly sweet and lightly to moderately acidic, then finishes lightly sweet and moderately bitter. Palate is on the fuller side of medium, oily with a lively carbonation. Nothing blow away about this IPA but its simple mellow flavors are its best trait.

pineypower (2608) - Pine Barrens, New Jersey, USA - FEB 15, 2015
Bottle. Pours out a decent amber/copper color with a small white head. Aroma is of nice piney/sappy/citrusy hops, light bready malts, caramel, citrus. Taste is of some grassy, citrus, sappy hops, some bready malts, mild amount of sweetness, but the hops show up again and it finishes with a solid hopiness.

On tap at Brewdog Barcelona. Appears a clear radiant yellow orange with an off white head. The smell is crisp fruit, rich malt, a bit of caramel. The taste is a very blend of malt and hogs. Tangy fruit blending seamlessly with caramel, roasted malt ending dry, sweet and fruity. Certainly not a modern IPA but had is merits in it’s old school complexity. Medium in body with fine, soft carbonation. Nice stuff.
