COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Stone Brewing Co (Escondido, CA) and Smuttynose Brewing Company (Portsmouth, NH) have teamed up to create just 30 barrels (930 gallons) of Custer’s Last Stand. Stone’s founder Greg Koch joined Smutty in the brew process in New Hampshire, where they made – don’t be surprised – an IPA. Not just any IPA though, a “right-after-Prohibition Ballantine IPA” as mentioned in Stone’s Mitch Steele’s book on IPAs.

Draft at Whole Foods Plymouth Meeting. Poured hazy dark straw with off-white head that laced well. Nose was bready caramel malt, tropical fruit, including grapefruit and pineapple, Tastes hoppy, with bready caramel malt, resiny hops, tropical fruit, and a bitter finish.

Good beer. Poured from a bottle. No real head. Cloudy orange-yellow color. Great fruity aroma, hides the strong, well balanced alcohol taste. Yum.

Aroma is pine and malt with an sort of earthy feeling to it. The taste is sweet and malty and has a sort of gentleman feeling to it. Yeah, that’s it, it’s like a blend of old English IPA and American IPA. Pretty good and slick brew, but no world changer. Glad to have tried it though.

Hazy orange gold color with a firm orange-tinged head. Aroma nice and floral with notes of pine. Taste firmly bitter, clean, and hoppy, with a crystal malt note to give it a little body and a nice finish.

Lightly hazy dark orange body, thin off-white head, minimal lacing. Orange rind, resin, a fair bit of sugary cereals. Medium to full bodied, assertive bitterness in the finish, semi-sweet throughout, moderate carbonation.

Pretty nice, but the Elysian space dust I just had was a little better. Still good citrus and integrated, well hidden booze. Pours amber with good head and lacing. Medium bitter finish. Some grapefruit peel. Tap at Black Squirrel.

Keg at sheffield tap. Hazy orange with small white head. Aroma is malty bread and cereal, resiny woody hops and some lemon citrus. Taste is spicy from the abv and bitter. Nice oily mouthfeel. Nice malty ipa.

My Bottom Line:
Resinous bitterness is enveloped by honeyed sugars, while protruding citrusy edges help shape this solid but nondescript Double IPA.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A veil of foam covers the misty amber-y golden.
-The high effervescence helps drinkability (otherwise this would have been a heavy brew.
-There is balance within the intensity.
-For a collaboration of two great brewers, this is pretty run-of-the-mill of a product. Flavorful yes, but there are dozens of very similar Double IPAs out there.

Bottle.
