Stone Brewing Co (Escondido, CA) and Smuttynose Brewing Company (Portsmouth, NH) have teamed up to create just 30 barrels (930 gallons) of Custer’s Last Stand. Stone’s founder Greg Koch joined Smutty in the brew process in New Hampshire, where they made – don’t be surprised – an IPA. Not just any IPA though, a “right-after-Prohibition Ballantine IPA” as mentioned in Stone’s Mitch Steele’s book on IPAs.

22oz bottle from Grand Cru, Rimini. It pours a clean golden color with a medium white head. Aroma is hoppy with notes of caramel, orange peel, grapefruit, grass. Taste is grassy, lightly hoppy and leafy, grainy, with notes of bread dough, caramel, mango and pears. Medium bodied with good carbonation. Overall, ok quite tasty

Bottle - golden amber with slim white head. Aroma of citrus orange, sweet malt. Nice balance of flavours citrus orange, solid malt backbone. Medium body, moderate to low carbonation. Some alcohol warmth. Probably really a DIPA, but very good in any event.

(650ml bottle from Systembolaget) Pours a nearly clear dark orangish gold, with a big foamy white head with lots of lace. Aroma of caramel and bread malts, orange rind, some light grapefruit and peach, florals and just a bit of oniony undertone. On the palate, fairly sweet but complex malt core with caramel, cereals, but kept in check with hops that give orange and florals and resins that are softly medicinal. Fairly bitter from the middle on, oily and resinous, but the malt core sticks around and means it isn’t too mouth-stripping. Aftertaste is quite astringent and a bit medicinal, with light pine and floral hops. Medium full body with fairly high carb and a touch of alcohol heat. An interesting beer in a historical context, replicating the old Ballantine recipe (though without the wood aging I guess?). It actually drinks pretty well too, with big complex malts and hops that are less fruity but not really less beefy than many contemporary IPAs. I think I’d like to have this fresh and see how punchy the nose gets.

Flaska delad med @thaalcoholic, tack. Grumlig bärnstensfärgad vätska med stort ljust skum. Doftar till en början nästan ingenting men efter en stund kommer en barrig humleton fram. Samma sak med smaken, kådig med stor beska.

Bottle 65 cl. Pours a clear, deep golden with an off-white head. Very perfumy hop aroma. Rich malty body, loads of sweetness but everything kept in check by the solid if somewhat perfumy hops. A Double IPA to be honest - and a very delicious one. 181214
