Native to northern Europe, Baltic porters evolved from British porters once exported to the Russian hinterland. Unlike their British cousins, Baltic porters are often brewed as lagers, the tradition we’ve followed. This beer is big, bold & smooth, with malty flavors reminiscent of coffee, dark fruit & raisins. 2009 Bottle from tap & mallet, rochester. Dark pour with a solid tan sheet of suds. Nose of burnt sugar, licorice, & a little chocolate in the somewhat nicely robust nose. Some smokey notes as well. Carbonation is very soft, showing up mainly at the end. Thick too, carrying firm malty sensations, chocolate and smoke, some licorice too, and robust raisin notes and chocolate covered dark fruits. Has held up considerably well over the 3 years...remaining loaded with malty flavors and thick, somewhat chewy body...even still remotely hoppy in the finish to balance it all out. Quite nice.

Bottle, 15 months after bottling. Clear, almost black, small creamy head. Aroma: sweet malty, breadish, fruity esters, bit soy sauce. Medium to heavy sweet, full body. Very complex taste: malty notes, some sweetness, coffee, bit fruity . Short, bit hoppy finish with some roastiness. Well hidden alcohol. Well balanced.

Color is a cola brown with medium beige head. Aroma is anise, malt, molasses, black cherry and coffee. Medium but very clean body, it drinks like butter. Flavors are the same. A bit sweet but with roast so it stays balanced. Sweet malts dominate and the coffee or toffee adds a real nice touch.

An absolutely fantastic showcase of the style, and a great example of how good a well-made beer can be (regardless of how rare it is). Smooth and surprisingly light, with almost no flavors or esters from the yeast, and a lot of complex malt sweetness and chocolate. Seriously good.

Bevuta in bottiglia da 33 cl da orobirra a torino. Italia. Valida. Scura. Al naso ottimi sentori. Un po amarognola per il genere e non dispiace. Finale degno di friggitelli.
