Native to northern Europe, Baltic porters evolved from British porters once exported to the Russian hinterland. Unlike their British cousins, Baltic porters are often brewed as lagers, the tradition we’ve followed. This beer is big, bold & smooth, with malty flavors reminiscent of coffee, dark fruit & raisins. 2009 Vintage. Enjoyed from a 22oz bomber in a stemless wine glass. the beer pours a nice black hue, with a low tan head. The nose shows really appetizing characters of chocolate milk, dark chocolate, and a slight roast note; along with a background note of Munich and perhaps a medium lovibond crystal malt. Any hop character has long fallen out of solution. The palate shows much of what was advertised in the aroma, with a touch more emphasis on roasted character. Milk chocolate, mellow roasted flavors, a nice residual caramel/toasted malt sweetness, and a finish that is absolutely surprising in its dryness. Again, hop bitterness seems nonexistent, indicating that the alcohol may be adding a touch of bitterness, along with the roasted malt. Overall, the beer shows a level of complexity and refinement that is exemplary. A stellar example of the style.

Toasted soy, lightly chocolate, doughy, dry aroma. Standard 12oz longneck, OK label, though Smuttynose labels suck -- Chronos or something, and engraved. Mmm. Seedy bitterness, bittersweet cocoa, soy and pretensive grain (millet, buckwheat, etc.) notes. Medium body. Slick mouthfeel though it loses a little carbonation. Stiffly bitter, gunpowder finish with bakers chocolate overtones. Market Square Liquors.

Pours pitch black with a finger worth of mocha brown head that settles to a ring and leaves a couple soapy ropes of lace. Nose involves rich dark chocolate, wood smoke, minty herbals, suggestions of ham hocks, chocolate covered raisins, a bit of licorice, plenty of toasted malt. Decently sweet, fairly bitter. Medium to full bodied, fairly oily, active, with a long smoky roasted finish. About as good as it gets for the style. That smoky factor is wonderful.

Bottle into stout glass. Inky black w thick tan head on a hard pour. Aroma of molasses w hints of licorice. Taste has a very slight bitter bite on the front that is rounded out by a silky almost creamy mouthfeel. Taste similar to atone w perhaps some vanilla and creamy notes. Very fine. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Really good. Strong malty roasted aroma. Beautiful and dark with a nice head and lacing. Big flavor with dark malts, vanilla and some coffee. Complex but exactly what one would hope for.

Taster at the source. Pours coffee brown/black with a beige head. Aroma is dark fruit, bittersweet chocolate. Flavor follows. Tons of rich semisweet chocolate, a bit of date. Coffee grinds and a bit of pine bitterness finish this off.

Au nez, il y a de la mélasse, riche, caramel et bcp de grains. En bouche, c'est épais, crémeux, amer, caféiné et vanillé. La finale est crémeuse, alcoolisée, vanillé et sucre d'orge. Bien bon! ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

UPDATED: JUN 1, 2015 I’m a fan. Nice roasty aroma. Semi sweet mild bitterness and smoky. Great coffee presence with a slight chocolate note. Very smooth medium body. I would drink this again without a question.

Pours a dark brown with a tan foam head. Aroma is fruity up front, with chocolate, roast, and alcohol. Flavor is sweet dark fruit, chocolate, and roast, with a lightly bitter finish. Tasty.
