First brewed in England, these potent, malty monsters were frequently aged before being put into small bottles and sold as strong beers or even medicinal tonics. The American version has been blown up with more alcohol, larger bottles and more hops.
Smuttynose Barleywine straddles these two branches of the barleywine tree. When you taste it, youíll notice deep, rich caramel malt flavors, balanced with hop bitterness. Fruity hop flavors act as a garnish for its amped-up but classic flavor. For a more refined experience, tuck a few bottles away for a year or two. The alcohol will mellow and the hop aromas will fade into the background, leaving the luscious malt to shine on its own.

Bottle from 2011. Muddy looking burnt sienna pour with a thin wisp of white head. Aroma is pretty much the quintessential smell you look for in a barley wine. Rich toffee and dark plum, candied figs, chocolate, caramel, oak, and a little dry red wine. Taste is a little bit of a let down compared to the aroma. It is sweet, though much drier than expected. Some raisin, prune, cocoa, and toffee. Finishes oddly tannic for something not oak aged and containing no fruit. Palate is hearty, chewy, and lightly carbonated. Overall a very high quality English barley wine. I would love to get the chance to try it fresh. I like a little heat in barley wines, and this is close to two years aged and smooth as can be. Virtually no alcohol burn or flavor. Yet another great big beer from Smuttynose.

Bottle @ Welcome back old spice tasting. Small sample. The aroma has caramel, sweetness, oranges. Bit hazy, amber coloured beer with an off/white head. The taste is sweet, has caramel, hint of dust, orange. Becomes more dry in the end. Seems a bit dull-lacking complexity.

Medium brown creamy off white head. Toffee boozy brown sugar aroma. Strong malty roasted caramel with lots of dark dried fruits (fig, raisin, date, etc). Nice bitterness to balance in the finish. Lingering fruit and bitter. Nice.

Well done and easy drinking for style. Pours cloudy brown with good head. Citrus and some tang in finish. Some booze. Well done, and my kind of barley wine. Tap at Churchkey.

Draft at Churchkey (2013 and 2009 vintages). First, itís cool there are a bunch of vintage smutty beers on draft on a Monday night. Clear amber pour - 2013 has a bunch of head, 2009 has practically none. I must be getting burnt out on rating, because my impression of 2013 was "American barleywine; thick, syrupy beer concentrate; the usual" and my 2009 impression was "an old, stale, lifeless version or 2013." Anyway, sweet or oxidized depending on year; full body, slick texture. Overall: totally fine for what it is, but at this point in life itís nothing I really want to have again.
