4.1 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle from 2011. Muddy looking burnt sienna pour with a thin wisp of white head. Aroma is pretty much the quintessential smell you look for in a barley wine. Rich toffee and dark plum, candied figs, chocolate, caramel, oak, and a little dry red wine. Taste is a little bit of a let down compared to the aroma. It is sweet, though much drier than expected. Some raisin, prune, cocoa, and toffee. Finishes oddly tannic for something not oak aged and containing no fruit. Palate is hearty, chewy, and lightly carbonated. Overall a very high quality English barley wine. I would love to get the chance to try it fresh. I like a little heat in barley wines, and this is close to two years aged and smooth as can be. Virtually no alcohol burn or flavor. Yet another great big beer from Smuttynose.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Majority of 22 oz. bottle, consumed on 9-11-14. “Bottle-conditioned in: 2013,” so this beer is about a year old. Juicy, fruity aroma is pleasant and simple and features scents of red grape, lemon, and caramel. Pours a clear copper with a moderate amount of golden taupe head. Hazy, cloudy, and containing suspended particulate only in the final of multiple pours. Produces long-lasting lacing. Dry, spicy taste features flavors of orange, caramel, dry Curacao liqueur, cream, lemon, lime, and cinnamon. Briny and boozy. Bitter finish and aftertaste. Medium body (lighter than I expected and light for the style). Lively in the palate. Overall, Smuttynose Barleywine Style Ale is forgettable and not particularly likable. Like all too many other barley wines, it’s just “too much” to be enjoyable.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
A nice barley wine. Lots of sweet dried fruit and bubblegum and honey. Same flavors with a strong hop finish that lasts. Good stuff.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
UPDATED: OCT 28, 2014 Wasn’t totally impressed with last year’s version when I first had it, but after letting a bottle sit for 8 months or so, this one is growing on me. A really rich caramel malt nose on an orangey-brown body. Full-bodied malt with rich caramel and plummy dark fruit round out the thick caramel malt taste profile. A touch of citrus and complementary hops make this a winner, with a little aging.

3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
A barley wine with some flaws. The aroma is the best with the beer. Nice malty aroma with a little citrus from american hops. The taste is light caramel with some citrus. Some harsch alcohol in the finish.

4.6 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Brilliant clear amber/copper under a generous off-cream head. Big sticky nose of delightful stone fruit and cherry and plums, and dark fruity caramel. Nice sticky flavor that’s balanced with a earthy, leafy sort of hoppy bitterness on the finish. Lots of caramel, plum, apple, raisin, cherry and dark sticky maltiness throughout until the hoppy and leafy finish. Really complex and balanced.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bomber, 2013. Pour is a clean clear copper with a good ivory colored head. Aroma is caramel, bread, plum, pineapple, orange, spice and pininess from the hops. Taste is bitter up front smoothed out by a sweet malty body. Sweet citrus fruits, caramel and earthy hops come through. Finishes with a smooth hop bitterness. Definitely an American style barley wine but smoother and not as hop aggressive as say a Bigfoot ale. Booze is felt on the way down but well hidden in the taste. Pretty nice stuff.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
While many American barleywines seem more like overly sweet Imperial IPAs, this one actually feels like a barley wine with a present yet balanced hoppy backbone.
