COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
First brewed in England, these potent, malty monsters were frequently aged before being put into small bottles and sold as strong beers or even medicinal tonics. The American version has been blown up with more alcohol, larger bottles and more hops.
Smuttynose Barleywine straddles these two branches of the barleywine tree. When you taste it, you’ll notice deep, rich caramel malt flavors, balanced with hop bitterness. Fruity hop flavors act as a garnish for its amped-up but classic flavor. For a more refined experience, tuck a few bottles away for a year or two. The alcohol will mellow and the hop aromas will fade into the background, leaving the luscious malt to shine on its own.

22 oz bomber bottle, 2007 vintage. Pours amber, with a bit of chill haze but otherwise clear. Minimal head. Sappy aroma with lots of candied fruits (raisins, figs) but also some sweet brown sugar along with citrus hops, bread and some alcohol notes. Hop bitterness comes through up front, balancing the heavy malt profile nicely, followed by lots of citrus hops. Full bodied and sticky with average carbonation and a smooth, if somewhat bitter finish. Warming. Nice sipper.

Amber color. Bit sweet aromas of caramel and bread, ripe fruits. Sweet malt taste, fruit and caramel, heavily influenced by the hops - grass and pine. Bitter-sweet finish. Goes well with cheese.

Pours a hazy reddish brown. Aromas of hops, caramel malts, kind of medicinal. Flavor is to strong for me, big alcohol taste, malty with a citrus taste.

Bottle @ Welcome back old spice tasting. Small sample. The aroma has caramel, sweetness, oranges. Bit hazy, amber coloured beer with an off/white head. The taste is sweet, has caramel, hint of dust, orange. Becomes more dry in the end. Seems a bit dull-lacking complexity.
