UPDATED: APR 7, 2012 Another solid entry from the Smutty big beer series. Lustrous pour, a bright amber that practically glows. Fairly mild carbo/head, but a nice nutty aroma. It’s definitely an aggressive American bw, with some hop assertion at the fore and some nut/malt flavors balancing it out as it warms. Good stuff.

Yup, thats a barleywine alright. And what a "handsome" woman on the label, as well ; )

22 oz. bottle, pours a cloudy blood orange with a medium white head. Aroma of citrus hops, tropical pitted fruits, other fruity esters, and some bready caramel malt. Flavour is very complex, full of a range of fruits (pitted fruits, peaches), fairly bitter dry citrus hops, and some caramel malts. Extremely deep and rich flavour profile, with everything working in great harmony. Finishes fruity and quite hoppy, more hopped than a traditional barley wine. Excellent barley wine - much better than the average suggests.

Draft. Murky amber brown color. Sweet caramel and pine aroma. Taste starts sweet then very bitter for a barleywine. Not bad.

Its big indeed, smells like vanilla and alcohol. Taste is a little harsh but enjoyable. You get the barley. Good beer but something you should share. After a few sip, it’s way too strong.

2011 bottle. Pours a cloudy copper color with a small head that fades quickly. Nice aroma of toffee, figs, caramel, chocolate, and light booze. Taste is smooth, lightly sweet. More fruity than the aroma but a lot of toffee and caramel comes through. Don’t taste much hops or bitterness here. Finish is long and a bit boozy. Thick mouthfeel. Alcohol well hidden. A solid barleywine.

Bottle from 2011. Muddy looking burnt sienna pour with a thin wisp of white head. Aroma is pretty much the quintessential smell you look for in a barley wine. Rich toffee and dark plum, candied figs, chocolate, caramel, oak, and a little dry red wine. Taste is a little bit of a let down compared to the aroma. It is sweet, though much drier than expected. Some raisin, prune, cocoa, and toffee. Finishes oddly tannic for something not oak aged and containing no fruit. Palate is hearty, chewy, and lightly carbonated. Overall a very high quality English barley wine. I would love to get the chance to try it fresh. I like a little heat in barley wines, and this is close to two years aged and smooth as can be. Virtually no alcohol burn or flavor. Yet another great big beer from Smuttynose.

Bottle from 2007. Pours deep hazy brown, almost mahogany. Big malty nose with plenty of caramel, toffee, raisin, and chocolate. Flavor is more of the same, with hops playing a surprisingly large role in offsetting the heavy malt backbone. Slight soy sauce and licorice notes; not sure if they are a product of the aging or not. Well balanced brew that reemphasizes the maturity and equilibrium that can be achieved through properly aging a barleywine. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
