Hoptagon (56), Arlington, Virginia, USA May 1, 2008 22 oz. Bottle. This beer pours a ruby red with a small off white head. On the nose it has hints of caramel, toasted bread and citrus hops. Displays some flavors that I’d associate with old people fruit like dates, figs, etc. Flavor also displays some syrupy malt flavor that is balanced nicely by tart bittering hops. Mouthfeel is medium heavy with a mild but persistent carbonation. Finish is on the bitter side, with the alcohol beginning to show as the beer warms. Overall a very good beer and one of the better Smuttynose offerings.
decaturstevo (1161), decatur, Tennessee, USA Aug 7, 2008 Slightly hazed brown pour with tight off white head and lace. Very dried fuitiness with a hint of abv on the nose. Nice fruity and raisins and a good bitter stand out on the taste. Full bodied with good carbonation. Solid to the style. schlomo (5), Agawam, Massachusetts, USA does not count Jul 31, 2008 2007 - Poured from bomber a nice cloudy caramel color with a tan head. Smells strongly of hops and some caramel sweetness. Front sweet flavor leaves quickly to sharp hoppy, syrupy alcohol back end. Alcohol is not well hidden here, warms me up! A little like a cough medicine. Great Winter sipping beer. Sparky27 (451), Phoenix, Arizona, USA Jul 25, 2008 Bomber courtesy of hellbilly. Pours a cloudy dark amber with one finger light tan head and great lacing. Nose is surprisingly hoppy with floral and citrus hops, sweet malt and alcohol. Taste is very much the same – citrus hops, caramel malts, some dark fruits and a bitter resin-like hop finish. Alcohol is pretty noticeable in this one but it’s not overpowering. Medium, semi-creamy mouth feel. Now this is my kind of BW – doesn’t have that cloying - sickly sweet palate - more IPA-like. Is that enough dashes? NO – Fantastic beer - thanks Josh - !!! ucusty (864), Wake Forest, North Carolina, USA Jul 23, 2008 Tasted at the Carolina Crew gathering, Greenville NC - thanks to Todd for this! Vintage 2004 Copper pour thin tan head. Sweet caramel malts on the nose. Similar flavor with light hints of citrus. Dry finish emacgee (991), Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA Jul 21, 2008 2004. Pours a copper amber with no head. The nose is a tad sweet, lightly citrusy, light alcohol, the aroma is pretty subdued in general. The flavor is dry with some alcohol, citrusy, waxy, oxidized. Dry waxy mouthfeel with a warming finish. Would like to try straight.
