JohnnyJ (1283), Carlsbad, California, USA Oct 7, 2006 Updated: Oct 9, 2006Light amber pour with a good head. Sweet citrus, caramel, and hops aroma. Starts out pretty sweet with caramel, grapefruit, and malt flavors. Finishes with a large dose of hoppy bitterness. treadyroc (112), St. Leonard, Maryland, USA Oct 6, 2006 I’ve seen a dozen of these sitting on the shelf @ the store for over 2 months now, & hadn’t tried it... Why? I dunno, but I obviously was missing the boat on this one. The 120 IBUs & amazing hop selection truly make this one of the better IPAs I’ve had. I’m a huge double/imperial IPA fan, & I think I’ll be headed back to the store to clean them out of these. At $5/ea, it’s a STEAL. illinismitty (1790), Nashville, Tennessee, USA Sep 26, 2006 2006 Bomber. I have been looking for this for quite a while. Bought at Oak Tree in South Plainfield NJ. Pours a straw golden with a white head. Grapfruit and sugary malt aroma. The malt profile is nice, biscuit and pilsner like, but as a supporting act to the headliner.....hops. Hops that have notes of pine and grapefruit. Nice bitter finish that is not sticky, syrupy or sweet. Bitterness lingers nicely at the back of the mouth. You can tell this has some alchohol, but it hides itself well. Yet another great beer from Smuttynose, who does not get enough praise IMO. holdenn (1432), Chicago, Illinois, USA Sep 22, 2006 22 oz bomber pours golden with a nice hoppy grapefruit aroma and off white head. Medium mouthfeel and nicely carbonated grapefruit and lemony flavors with a little pine covering the palate well. A solid double I. OldRaspy (292), Virginia Beach, Virginia, USA Sep 18, 2006 Poured from a 22oz bottle a cloudy golden color with an off-white head. Aroma was citrus hops and a touch of malt. Flavor was a touch of grapefruit with a bito sweet malt and a nice hop bitter finish. Alcohol was hidden well. sstackho (249), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Sep 17, 2006 22oz bottle. Alcohol percentage not listed on the label, which is a bit unfair for a "big beer" series, in my opinion. Glad I’m at home and not having to monitor my alcohol consumption. Pours a somewhat light straw colour, varying head depending on pur, some carbonation, decent lacing. Nice aroma. Strong, full, well-rounded taste. Lots of hops. This beer hits you in the throat going down and leaves a solid taste in your mouth - but it is not one-dimensional. Tastes like there could be a lot of alcohol in there - let’s look it up. 9% - yup, that sounds about right. Sweet, but not overly so like I find some high-alcohol beers. This one was enjoyable all the way through. Good for a special occasion - like a Saturday night at home! TheEpeeist (1430), Swarthmore, Pennsylvania, USA Sep 16, 2006 22 oz bottle. Clear pink gold with a sticky bone head. Settles with patches. Roses, orange juice and caramel. Starts with a grilled nectarine sweetness turning to quinine then pith. Gets cottony. A nicely restrained double. Not spectacular but still delivers. mkgrenwel (420), Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA Sep 14, 2006 My god is this good. This is what an IIPA should taste like. I’ve found that the secret to a good hoppy beer is lots of malt, but with very light malts. This provides strong body and balance, but without becoming overly assertive. It gives the hops a table to stand on. Big A accomplishs this flawlessly. Huge resiny hops. Sticky, sweet and fruity. Grapefruit and pine. Entirely hidden alcohol. Strong bitterness, but in that smooth, rounded off warrior fashion. I’m damn impressed.
