stegosaurus (1882), Levittown, Pennsylvania, USA Aug 16, 2006 Bottle sampled with Beerded one. Pours copper with a decent size white head. Aroma of floral hops and citrus. The flavor is smooth as far as alcohol is concerned, citrus, pine flavored floral hops, with a sharp bitterness. hershiser2 (902), Charlottesville, Virginia, USA Aug 14, 2006 Big bottle purchased from Harris Teeter, Charlottesville. 2006 bottling. Pours murky amber with a small, soft beige head. Heavy citrus hops in the nose. Extreme hop taste, with some citrus and a finish of pepper. sheatripper (863), Brooklyn, New York, USA Aug 14, 2006 Tap at WAH. Hazy orange, frothy diminishing head. The word of the day is HOPS. Aroma smacked of hops (resin pine grapefruit), with some other floral and fruit scents and flavor was an absolute hop bomb. Hops, hops, and more hops. Lots of pine (appropriate for New Hampshire) and zest of grapefruit. Maybe it was the pub atmosphere, but this "Double IPA" is more like a gulpable super-hopped up stronger IPA (think Victory Hop Wallop) appropriate for pint service rather than those 2IPAs which call for "savoring" at warmer temparatures in a snifter (think Dogfish 90 minute or Goose Island Imperial). At any rate, an absolute thirsty hophead’s delight.
bombshelter (349), Washington, Washington DC, USA Aug 13, 2006 on tap at the public house in brookline, MA, for the HopHead throwdown. smells and tastes like paint thinner. citrus and fruit, booze. alcohol presence is painfully evident, lingers throughout. no me gusta. maybe it was a less-than-awesome keg, since I normally like this brewery’s offerings and clearly other people quite enjoyed the beer. jonnabrix (136), Newberrytown, Pennsylvania, USA Aug 11, 2006 This poured a golden amber color, with a small white head. The big aroma was full of hops and citrus. The flavor followed suit. Overall a great brew, that represented the style well. I would have this one again anytime. cbrixius (136), Newberrytown, Pennsylvania, USA Aug 11, 2006 I hadn’t had a good double IPA in awhile and this was the ticket. From a 22 oz. bottle, this poured a nice clear light amber with a dissipating white head. The aroma was very complex and I can sense a bit of orange in there. Went down smooth, had a kind of oily feel, which I kind of like. It warms the tummy. My previous favorites IPAs were Stoudts and DFH, so it would be interesting to compare them next to this one, I believe the Smuttynose would be right up there. xproudfoot (729), Paleolithic, Pennsylvania, USA Aug 10, 2006 Bot. Big gummy five alive citrus mix pineapple lime grapefruit orange fruit salad aroma. gold orange beer with fast fading offwhite head. tons of fruit as per aroma. modest gravirty palate, a little bitter-round, easy light, bubblegum finish. dang good. good lacing. LeopoldStoch (201), Green, Ohio, USA Aug 9, 2006 I really enjoyed this brew. It had a huge hop aroma at the forefront of it. The cascade and columbus hops are well pronounced throughout this beer. The flavors were good but I didnt think they lived up to what was going on in the aroma for this beer. The alcohol is hardly noticeable even at 9.2%. Overall a really good beer, and one I would love to have again.
