michaeltrego (101), Amherst, New Hampshire, USA Aug 15, 2005 Slightly bigger than the regular IPA, but just as good in all respects. Actually it’s more bitter in flavor, but less hoppy in aroma. Thank you sir, may I have another. WISEGUY572 (1244), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA Aug 8, 2005 Updated: Aug 12, 2005What a great surprise, the first wonderful beer from Smutty Nose. Beautiful copper beer, very clear, with a huge foamy head and a wonderful mouth feel. Nose of citrus, orange, grapefruit. Mouth of sweet malt, crushed with citrus, and huge bitter finish. Just malt and hops hops hops; as has been said of other IPAs, "we don’t need no stinkin’ balalnce!" Enough sweetness, citrus, and bitterness to mask the alcohol completely. I would say that this is among the best IPAs, ot quite a Stone Ruination, but wonderful. And quite a pleasant surprise! Yeah, it’s not balanced, and yeah, it tastes like a lot of other American IPAs, but I did really like this. // OK, now I understand the reviwers who said the beer is cloudy. First class is crystal clear, second less so, and third is cloudy. kramer (2407), Sunbury, Pennsylvania, USA Aug 7, 2005 22 oz bomber, State Line Liquors - Elkton, MD. Pours a deep straw/light copper, rather cloudy. Small head that disappears quickly. First sip reveals the expected heavy handed hop bitterness. Don’t really taste the 9% alcohol over the hops. Hops seem very one dimensional, finish lingers on for quite a while in the back of the throat. Not a beer for those afraid of the hops. Overall not one of the best IIPA’s that I’ve had, but still pretty decent. 22 ounces might be a bit much, wish I had a friend to split this one. adrian910ss (1395), philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA Aug 6, 2005 22 oz bomber. Pours a beautiful rich coppery color with a very thick beige tan head. Appearance resembles golden honey. Unfiltered, as you can see plenty of hops floating around. Smells of floral hops and grapefruit. Tastes like a good IPA should- slightly bitter, hoppy, and grapefruity. Stronger than the smuttynose ipa yet tastes slightly weaker. walter (359), Staunton, Virginia, USA Aug 6, 2005 22oz Bottle. Golden orange color, opaque. Wonderful floral hop aroma initially, followed by some bitter hops and alcohol as it warms. Heavy body. Heavy and smooth mouthfeel, nice carbonation. Flavors initially of hops and some citrus, rounded out nicely by a thick middle of light caramel malt. Finish is bitter, but not overpowering, with a nice tacky sour aftertaste. A big IPA indeed. Very enjoyable. Sregnar35 (729), Rotterdam, New York, USA Aug 5, 2005 220z bomber. Didn’t live up to what I was expecting. Hops were all bitter, no real character to them. Wish they mixed it up a bit. thehinge (244), Wilmington, Delaware, USA Jul 31, 2005 This is a hazey orange pour with very little head. Does have some lacing though. Not surprised about the haziness after drinking the regular Smutty IPA...I think it actually has hop particles floating in it. Aroma is of hops and fruit...very pleasant. Flavor has hints of citrus on the front end and has the hop bite you’d expect without being overboard. This is something I’d buy like forever. jefcon (997), Arlington, Virginia, USA Jul 31, 2005 Big, big aromas of hopcit and apricot. The substantial hop bite isn’t tart, but demonstrates the hops very well. Soapy, bitter, peach/apricot/lemon/sour apple fruit notes from the hops and a complimentary malt presence make this a delicious-tasting IPA. Palate is the only downside to this behemoth -- slightly cloying and residually bitter. However, at $3.99 for a bomber, worth every last penny.
