COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Farmhouse ales are less of a style and more of a loose branch on the beer family tree, originating in the agrarian borderland shared by France and Belgium. When farm owners needed to provide nourishment and compensation to seasonal farm workers, beer was an obvious part of the package, since they were already growing many of the ingredients. The humble origins of these beers meant that they were brewed with whatever ingredients were on hand. This lack of convention has lead to a wide range of expressions of the style and even breweries that specialize in or brew saisons exclusively, like Oxbow in Maine and Fantome in Belgium. We’ve tweaked the recipe for our Farmhouse Ale a little bit this year, adding a small amount of pineapple sage. The result is slightly amplified fruit character, that really adds to the flavor (but don’t be afraid that we’ve completely recreated the beer). Cheers!

Bottle pour into tulip glass from the brewery. Aroma is bready base with muted esters, yeast, and some alcohol. Appearance is hazy golden yellow with noticeable floaters; fizzy, effervescent (loud) transient finger-width white head fading to tiny white ring with no lacing. Taste is lightly sweet with some tart (reminds me of a Chardonnay). Palate is light bodied with thin texture and soft carbonation; airy finish. Overall, this is fairly disappointing on all fronts. Everything is really restrained/faint except for the fizzy pour--this may have been a bit old, I’ll have to rerate at some point.

Pours a hazy yellowish/gold color. Aromas of tart fruit, bread, hint of citrus, and yeasty. Flavor is malty/citrus. Leaves a yeasty orange aftertaste.

Bomber. Pours a cloudy orange with a dissipating white head and sweet fruity, spicy aroma. Taste is full of spices and fruity notes along with yeast into the peppery, fruity finish.

With Z, a bomber, pours a dark rusty orange with a very small beige head. Nose is yeast, spice and cloves. Taste is yeast with good funk, with spice , cloves and alcohol . Ends on the same tasting notes with a moderately long alcoholic ending . Nice saison ! Quaff Score 7 / 10

2013 purchased at Kenny Road Market in Columbus, Ohio for $2 in 2015 and enjoyed September 9, 2015 in a MadTree tulip/snifter. Look - Thick bubbled white head was there but gone before the picture. None left. No lacing. Very clear cider like body. Smell - Sour. Apple. Pineapple. Strawberry. Taste - Cider like apple/sour. Yeast. Malt. Cinnamon. Feel - Carbonation surprises me with look. Heavy. Overall - This is a two year old farmhouse. I didn’t have high expectations. Mainly a cider compared to saison.

Bomber from Kenny Road Market: murky gold pour, thin tan head. aroma of sweet lemony, yeast, background candy banana. tastes are malty, honey candy, belgian spices, dough, little funk, earthy. some late bitterness. feels heavy - yeasty, sweet sipper. kind of weird and all over the place.

On tap at hollywood during the spring Harley tour of 15. Looks like pale lager, has a stronger sweeter almost volatile smell. First taste is not as rude as I was expecting considering the alky content, hides it well. Rather smooth and well behaved. Even has hints of wildness on the tart side if you look fer them. Now a slight aroma of mildness sticks its head upa as well. Civilized and one of the better higher alky saisons I’ve had. Nice job smutty.

Pours a hazy orange-gold with a small white head. Aromas of yeast, spices and a variety of fruit. Tastes quite fruity along with spices and a good amount of sweet malt and yeast. Medium bodied. Well done.

Old rating. Solid, but boring saison. Appropriate hay, yeast, pepper, slightly tart, minimal barnyard. Just fine,

Bomber compliments of Phatdog1. Poured an unfiltered golden color with a white top and lacing. Taste of lemon grass, spice, earthy, and a touch of sage. Lively carbonation, medium body. Overall it’s a little watery on the palate, but Smuttynose did a fine job of hiding the alcohol!
