In Mary Shelley’s novel, a modern-day Prometheus combines disparate parts to create something uncontrollable, destructive and misunderstood. Luckily for you (and our team), brewing is much more manageable in our state-of-the-art brewery in Hampton, NH. The India Lager is a new hybrid-style of beer that’s begun surfacing throughout the craft brewing nations of the world. Frankenlager is Smuttynose’s interpretation of an IPA decoction-mashed and fermented like the classic lagers of Europe. It’s crisp and refined, but certainly not meek or mild, Frankenlager was one the first beers brewed in our new home and we’re excited to present it to the world.

From notes (Oct 2015). Refreshing drink that’s quite interesting. It’s not quite hoppy enough to be an IPA, and the lager qualities are pretty restrained, which leaves a beer that’s tasty, dry, clean, moderately-low hoppy, and quite nice.

Slightly hazy golden and copper coloured body with a dense, thick, three centimetre tall barely tan coloured head. Aroma of fresh PNW hops, some caramel and sweetness from honey, a good dose of pale malts and even a hint of citrus, along with the slightest twang of metal. Light to Medium-bodied; Strong metallic note with some lemons, earth, malt, grain and a touch of grass noticeable, all with a light sweet finish and some hops as well. Aftertaste shows a bit of sweetness, some smooth malts,a bit of citrus and a drying, grassy flavour along with a bit of herbs. Overall, a decent beer - a good lager and a nice variance to most beers in the craft world. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Whole Foods in Arlington (Clarendon), Virginia on 22-November-2015 for US$6,99 sampled at home in Washington on 12-January-2016.

Hazy yellow pour. Nice head. Taste is fruity on the front end and hoppy on the finish. I wouldn’t say it’s like a lager at all....no malty sweetness.

Taster at the source. Pours pale yellow straw with a white head. Aroma is biscuit, lemon, floral. Flavor follows. Lager crispness, biscuit backbone, mild citrus, floral hop. Mild pine bitterness in the finish. Not quite as hoppy as I expected it would be. Good balance, easy to drink at 7%.
