COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Gravitation Belgian Quad is the newest offering in the Smuttynose Big Beer Series. This strong dark ale is brewed using a variety of Belgian specialty malts along with 200 pounds of raisin puree per batch. The resulting flavor is a viscous mix of dark fruit, rum, toffee and raisins balanced with aromatic fruitiness of the Belgian yeast. The beer weighs in at 8.5% ABV from a starting gravity of 23 degrees Plato.

Bomber bottle and served in my lil Tripel Karmeliet glass: Pours a beautiful deep coppery amber with a fading head. The aroma has notes of rich over-ripened apple, prune, raisin and pear, bubblegum, caramel, pils malt, a touch of iodine/peat oak and plenty of yeast esters. The taste is sweet but not overbearing, fruity and yeasty with a heavy dose of alcohol to cleanse the palate. The mouth feel is sticky and lush with aggressive booze. I like this but missing the darker malts normally found within the genre. This bottle is already two years old but could stand a few more years of aging.

Its body has a deep warm reddish color with a small light tan head on top. This slowly fades to thick ring with a wispy thin island of foam in the middle. This makes some slick lacing on the glass. There are lots of fruity and yeasty notes that offer hints of raison, dried apricot, caramelized malt and alcohol. Its big full body has full smooth texture with lots of dark dried fruit notes, apricot, musty and bready yeast as well as dark caramelized almost chocolaty malts. There is an overall sweetness like Belgian sugar with a low hop presence.

Bottle at home. Pours cloudy dark orange to amber with a medium, frothy beige head, short retention with spare lacing. Aroma is toast, caramel, cookie, and nutty malt with dates and figs, dark Belgian candi sugar and earthy hops. Flavor is sweet caramel and cookie malt, dark Belgian candi sugar, dark fruits, light hops and bitterness with a sweet finish. Full body and medium carbonation.

Bomber. Pour is hazy amber with the expected visible sediment. Wispy khaki head. Aroma is dark fruit, banana, citrus and clove. Taste is plum, clove, caramel, pineapple, sweet citrus. Booze isn't overbearing. Good stuff.

I am reviewing this from notes and I had it poured into a chalice. The appearance was a hazy muddy brown color with light purple tinges on the sides of the glass. A half finger white to off white foamy head fills the top of the beer. The smell was that of a normal Belgian Quad in that it has the Belgian spices combining with some bananas, plums, raisins and ends up adding a nice bready and earthy yeastiness to it. The taste was sweet and spicy through the previously mentioned flavors leading to the same flavored aftertaste and into a dry finish. On the palate, it sat about a medium and indicated that this one was more of a sipper for the most part. Sessionable? Maybe, perhaps. Overall, this means everything for a good Quad. Would I have it again? Quite possibly. I’m super glad I found the notes of this today.

On tap @ Radio Maria. Deep tea-coloured amber. Rum& raisin aroma, a little grapey even, sweet. Rich fruity toffee palate, juicy acidity in the back (grape juice), light metallic tang in the finish.

22oz bomber: This one pours a darker caramel color. There was almost no head or lacing on it. Nice nose. Yeast, spices, caramel, dark fruits. The taste is very good. Some sweet caramel malt, raisin, bready, and a hint of roast and chocolate. Smooth. A very nice beer.

Bottle from May 2011. Dark fruits, alcohol, yeast, molasses abound. Pretty cloudy reddish amber hue. A sweet tartness in the initial bite. Mellowed out by the alcohol.

2009 bottle shared during some post-bus drinking at the Downtown Inn for RBWG. Toffee first and foremost with dark liquid chocolate secondary. Nice chocolatey feel with boozy toffee finish. Well done.
