COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The Gnome was brewed in homage to the recent arrivals of hoppy Belgian beers that we’re starting to see here in the US. I was really shooting for that beautifully soft hopping that’s found in the Houblon Chouffe, however, the Gnome has developed its own unique characteristics and flavor profile. The base beer is a Belgian triple brewed with White Labs Chimay-style yeast. I really liked the fruit character from this yeast, but man, that stuff still hasn’t dropped bright. The hopping was done with Vanguard, Sterling and East Kent Goldings. I think this beer has a lot of potential, though I’d like another shot at brewing the style. There is a very limited amount of this beer, so if you happen to see it on tap, go ahead and share a pint with your gnomies!

Poured milky orange with a small off white froth. Aroma of lactose, sour fruit. Medium body, flavour of liquorice, very bitter.

Bread, orange peel, molasses, and raisins in the aroma. Bittersweet flavor, with citrus and spice. Lots of fruit bitterness and some alcohol in the finish. A little hoppier than a typical Belgian beer, almost a cross between a tripel and an ESB, but very tasty and very good.

Cloudy hazy golden color - looks absolutely perfect. Taste is very strong super funk fruity with a soft mouthfeel. Hits of hops and burns of alcohol. Overall a funky one with tons of character. Almost too much character! ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

12oz pour at the Bier Baron DC. Pours a fizzy gold with some creamy, white head. Nose is nice, standard, some candy, some tropical fruit, some heavy citrus, pear, slightly phenolic. Flavor is similar, boozy, phenolic, mild pepper, pear, citrus, starfruit, soap. Boozy finish. Pretty solid.

Bottle from SBL (SP): Created a thick fluffy pillow of foaming head while violent carbonated golden liquid rested below. I should also note that the beer had a thick hazy presence of sediment floating in equilibrium. Aroma is amazingly fragrant and appetizing with scents of perfectly ripened bananas, the kind that are yellow with minor blackened spots type of ripe. Also has smells of other such fruits and reminds me of a blended fruit smoothie but the boozy whiff of alcohol diminishes such memories of any smoothies that my nose knows. The drink taste very organic with bitter green hops with notes of an authentic Belgian yeast strain that delivers spiciness and fruitiness funk. ABV is heavy hitting and having its toll on my bloodstream. I can only imagine this stuff on tap, WOW!

Bottle. Crystal clear golden hued pour with a moderate sized white head. Light alcohol legs. Aromas are of estery Belgian yeast, pear, persimmon and bright apple with a slight musty not. A fruity and also slightly spicy hop profile. Mild phenol. A hint of bready malt. Flavors are of alcohol, dried fruits, apricot, mild acidity (~low 3.9 to high 3.8 pH wise), moderately dry finish. Firm bitterness with a lightly herbal hop profile. Fuller carbonation with a medium body.

My Bottom Line:
Honeyed cereals, floral hoppiness and doughy yeast take this Belgian-style Strong Ale into a finish managed by alcohol and herbal hop bitterness.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A ring of foam circles the cloudy beige.
-The mouthfeel is professional; perhaps sweeter than my personal liking in this type of beer.
-Hops also contribute a citrusy touch.
-Never was a fan of Smuttynose’s Belgian-style efforts, but I have to say this is very enjoyable as a sipper.

Bottle.
