COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The Gnome was brewed in homage to the recent arrivals of hoppy Belgian beers that we’re starting to see here in the US. I was really shooting for that beautifully soft hopping that’s found in the Houblon Chouffe, however, the Gnome has developed its own unique characteristics and flavor profile. The base beer is a Belgian triple brewed with White Labs Chimay-style yeast. I really liked the fruit character from this yeast, but man, that stuff still hasn’t dropped bright. The hopping was done with Vanguard, Sterling and East Kent Goldings. I think this beer has a lot of potential, though I’d like another shot at brewing the style. There is a very limited amount of this beer, so if you happen to see it on tap, go ahead and share a pint with your gnomies!

My Bottom Line:
Honeyed cereals, floral hoppiness and doughy yeast take this Belgian-style Strong Ale into a finish managed by alcohol and herbal hop bitterness.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A ring of foam circles the cloudy beige.
-The mouthfeel is professional; perhaps sweeter than my personal liking in this type of beer.
-Hops also contribute a citrusy touch.
-Never was a fan of Smuttynose’s Belgian-style efforts, but I have to say this is very enjoyable as a sipper.

Bottle.

Poured from a bottle and shared. It is an orange volored beer with a hint offal head. The aroma is citrus and malty. The taste is very bitter and strong. It has a metallic aftertaste.

From a 22 oz bottle shared in Avon NC. Pours a cloudy gold with an off white head. Aroma of banana lacquer. Some fruity hop notes. Medium to heavy bodied, highly carbonated, moderately bitter finish.

Boozy, sweet, peppery and grassy hop notes. Boring, hard to drink, and not particularly tasty, though not bad.

Bottle shared by one of my co-workers. Poured a pretty clear, vibrant golden bronze color with a small, lasting, nice laced white head. Aroma was nice malts, notes of floral hops, citrus and lots of spice and yeast notes. Flavor had a nice Belgian yeast character with plenty of malts, sweetness and a nice citrus body with a touch of pine resin. Alcohol is totally hidden in this one, highly drinkable. Enjoyable.

22oz bottle. Pours a slightly hazy light amber color with a thin creamy, bright white head. Aroma is bright Belgian yeast, lightly spicy clove, grain, and a touch of alcohol and a hint of bubble gum. Taste is big clove and Belgian yeast, with sweet grain, and a bit of an estery alcohol presence. Medium body, with lighter carbonation.

Pretty good, but alcoholic. Pour is off amber with a thick white head that disappears quickly. Aftertaste is hoppy and bitter.

Cloudy orange-gold beer with a foamy white head that dissipates quickly into a thin film. Nose of sour yeast, bitter lemon, and candle wax. Flavor is semi-sour upfront, which grows a bit and then is counterbalanced by a musky bitterness. It has the general characteristics of a Belgian-style ale, but something seems a bit off. Decent beer, but there are tons better than this.
