3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
The hazy golden pour wears a robust, lasting white cover. Interestingly hoppy and fairly yeasty aroma with a strong yellow fruit ester profile reminiscence of apples, pears and unripe bananas, never in a juicy way thanks to the fun and most forward fennel pepperiness that accompanies it. Initially dry in the palate, it grows sweeter as it gains heat. In mouth, it remains of light to medium consistence, deploying small bubbles, almost crisp, all over the palate. Minimally bready, it attempts to remain refreshing and almost succeeds, were it not for the fact that it grows a bit hot as it warms, but not much more so than youíd expect from a 9% ale. Fairly complex for an American take although hoppy enough (earthy, floral) that you would not think it Belgian.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Pour is golden yellow, relatively clear, ok head, ok lacing. Aroma is grassy and light fruits. Flavor is of grassy and bitter hops, a welcome approach, light fruits, not sure what else besides some yeast and spice. Mouthfeel moderate to light with an acidity.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
UPDATED: SEP 19, 2012 22oz bottle, bottle-conditioned in 2011. Totally clear, golden/orange color. Hazy on the second pour. Minimal white head leaving spotty lace. Weird alcohol aroma, like a liquored champagne. Definitely hopped up, but thatís secondary. Taste is a decent, more dry bitterness, from the hops... Not entirely bad if you can get past the almost medicinal aroma. Nice, light carbonation, good, more dry texture, long finish. Big and unique, but a bit difficult to drink. Itís a shame, because I usually love Smuttynose. The commercial description does seem to imply that this brew missed the mark from what the brewmaster intended, so I guess it makes sense. Unfortunately, it doesnít get any better as it warms. 4 / 4 / 5 / 4 / 10 (2.7)
Re-rate, 9/19/2012: 22oz bottle, split 3 ways. 2011 vintage. Hazy orange yellow pour, little white head leaving good lace. Smooth lighter carbonation, creamier texture. Nice light soft hops, belgian yeast, light banana. Zesty estery spicy sweetness. Enjoyed this much more the second time around, but itís still of itís mark. Probably helped that I had 2 people to help me finish it off.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bomber from Samís, Durham. Strong, malty, yeasty Belgian golden. Dry in places, with a fleeting note of menthol amidst the sweetness. Could be more dry and complex. Mouthfeel is a bit slick, overall kinda heavy feel. Decent.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Pours a dark golden/light orange color with a small white head that doesnít leave any lacing. Floral and fruity aromas of apricot and banana, along with some spices. Flavors of apricot, peach, banana, spices, yeast and butterscotch. Medium bodied with a slight bitterness. A pleasant beer. No hint of the 9% ABV.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pours a nice clear amber with a fairly thick cream-white head that leaves a fair amount of lacing. Aroma has a fruity core of banana and apple with malty and butterscotch tones. Strong flavor is mainly fruity, again apple and banana, with a malty note, a hint of butterscotch, and a bitter metallic tang that gives it quite a punch. This beer is not for the faint of heart! Above average body has a lively, sassy, fizzy texture that leaves a fruity, tangy, ragged and somewhat metallic finish.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
22 oz bottle shared by csbosox. Pour is clear golden orangeish with a smallish off-white head. Aroma is sweet banana fruit, a bit over ripe, along with a clove yeastiness. Taste is the nose, sweetn grain malt, banana esthers and clove yeastiness. There is a decent hop brightness at the back of the taste, which jumps out a bit. Palate is medium bodied, grainy, lingering clove in the finish. A bit heavy handed on the yeast characteristics for my liking. Thanks for sharing Chris.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
BottleÖ Clear light amber ale with a small, creamy, white head. Decent retention. The nose presents floral hops, peaches, pear, clove and mild banana. Full-bodied with an oily mouthfeel and tingly carbonation. The flavor is floral and bitter, offering pear and boatloads of apricot and peach. Finishes moderately bitter, mildly spicy and grassy. Bottle courtesy of growler. Thanks, Scott!

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle. Poured clear golden color with an average frothy off-white head that was mostly lasting with good lacing. Moderate fruit, yeast and alcohol aroma. Medium body with a smooth texture and soft carbonation. Medium complex sweet flavor with a medium sweet finish of moderate duration. My expectations where met.

2.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
22 oz. bottle from Bertís Better Beers. Used a snifter. Pours deep gold color with off-white head that left spotty lace. Over all l I really like Smuttynose as a whole however, this one just didnít do it for me. The nose and taste had a chemical like taste. Sort of like a household cleaner. A boozy, super-hopped up Belgian IPA just isnít for me. I almost feel bad leaving a low rating for it but either I had a bad bottle or this is just a sloppy mess. I damn near couldnít finish it.
