Beer and human life have a lot in common. For centuries, no one knew quite how either really worked. Beer fermentations were believed to begin when a “magic stick” was dipped into a fresh batch of wort. Without microscopes, no one knew that a tiny, sugar-eating fungus turned all that sugar into alcohol and carbon dioxide. Biologists faced similar mysteries about human life. One widely-accepted belief was that teeny, tiny people, called homunculi, would grow into full size babies inside of a woman (that’s where the label comes from!).
Homunculus is a strong, golden Belgian ale with a pronounced hop character. We’re not talking bitterness, but hop flavor and aroma. The Belgian-style yeast strain contributes significant fruity esters that mix with the hop profile to create a taste that’s more than the sum of its parts.

From bottle. Nice tripel-style aroma with yeasty bread, bubblegum, and coriander. Sweet alcohol, honey, and mild hop notes. Medium golden-amber hazy with creamy off-white lacing head. Medium-heavy body with high carbonation. Starts sweet with tons of malt, coriander, and honey. Dry astringent yeasty character with alcoholic warming. Big bitter finish with lingering sweet notes. Nice BSA.

Bottle, 2013. Pours in hazy orange, almost amber body, low white head. Aroma has strong yeasty age flavour, evident notes of alcohol. Wood, little bit of banana in the background, probably coming from yeast. Taste has pretty high earthy dull bitterness, yeast after taste. Malty almost honey sweetness with light cloves. Body is full, heavy, medium-high carbonation.

Bottle 65cl, a cloudy copper beer. Nose is intense on belgian yeast ripped fruits. Aroma is very sweet on ripped fruits, quince, belgian yeast, peppery hops, quite sharp and unbalanced, vinous, champagne notes, old orange, candied fruits, astringent finish.

Cloudy orange, frothy white head. Aroma of peaches, orange zest, coriander, and tart banana. Peppery on the tongue initially, yielding to spicy peach and orange....the sweetness was perfectly balanced with hop appearances.

This was poured into a tulip. The appearance was a semi-hazy bronzed orange color with a slim little white head that dissipated pretty quickly. Lacing runs about lightly in a semi-filmy nice looking way. The smell had a sweet grassy to citrusy burst running into some light floral hops. A light breadiness shows with some Belgian sugars to balance out the aroma. The taste was moderately sweet with the Belgian sugars, grassiness, floral qualities and citrusy hops to run slightly into the flavor. The aftertaste is semi-floral with sweet grassiness and Belgian sugars. The finish is dry and semi-sweet. On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium in body with a pretty good sessionability about it. Carbonation runs fairly light. There’s a nice dryness along my tongue. Overall, I’d say this was a nice Belgian Strong ale that I would have again.
