mgermani (591), Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada Dec 26, 2007 Many thanks to Hogtownharry for the bottle! Pours an inky, oily black with a small deep brown head. Holy smokes, I could smell this thing a foot away as soon as I popped the top! Licorice, dark toffee, cereal, and molasses. Wow, no complaints about the taste. Bitter resinous hops and tarry, black, thick malt. Plenty of licorice flavour - nice! Dark, fruity, smoky aftertaste lingers as beer warms. Strong alco burn. Thick creamy body with decent carb. What a treat!
Arayaga2 (752), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA Aug 27, 2008 Deep brown with with a fast fleeting brown head. Aroma is sweet and floral with citrusy hops. Taste is almost unexpectedly rich, with deep roasty coffee, dark fruit, and a finishing hop buzz. Very sweet, but still fairly balanced, with a velvety mouthfeel. It does, however become a bit cloying and hard to drink after the first 8ozs. $6/22oz dlovell2 (109), Columbia, Maryland, USA Aug 26, 2008 Had sample at the Smuttynose brewery in Portsmouth, NH. Black color with little head. Roasted malt, coffee and hops aroma . Coffee and roasted malts flavors with nice hops finish. matt7215 (554), Cambridge, Ontario, Canada Aug 21, 2008 bomber from premier gourmet. 2008 vintage. pour black with a short lived tan head. aromas of hop resin, roasted malts, alcohol burn. flavours are sweet easy dark malts, chocolate a plenty, some caramel, big hops. finishes coffee and hops bitter. very fresh and somewhat hot. could do with some time in the cellar. id gladly purchase this again and leave it down for a year minimum.
