Originally brewed in the early 19th century for export from Britain to the imperial court of Russia’s Catherine the Great, imperial stouts are characterized by their dark color & full body. This style features a rich, malty sweetness coupled with aggressive hopping (especially in American interpretations). Notes of dried fruit as well as roasted malt flavors are typically present.

This beer poured black with no light penetration and formed a dark brown foamy head that left circular lace as it subsided. An aroma of malt, coffee and chocolate is present with a hint of raisins. The flavor malt, coffee and burnt chocolate. The finish is fairly light for this style with a touch of bitterness. Reminds me more of a chocolate porter than an imperial. So as imperials go, it is not the best representation, but overall, it is a good beer.

650ml bottle at the BeerGeek bar, Prague. Black color with nice beige brown creamy head. roasted malty and heavy hoppy aroma, some chocolate, cocoa and coffee notes, heavy pine - spruce - juniper. Sweet and bitter taste, more malty than the aroma, roasted, caramel and soy sauce notes when it gets warmer. Medium to full oily silky body with soft carbonation.

Aroma and taste of chocolate and burnt coffee. Taste is also dark fruit, vanilla and booze. Not a bad imperial but I had higher expectations. Might get again.

My taste prefers sweeter and a bit thicker but overall a fine stout. I’ve enjoyed a few pints.

Bottle from LCBO. Label says 10.0%. BB in 2 weeks. Pours a mahogany-ish black with a surprisingly light, tan-ish head that drops quick to leave islets and peninsulas around the edge (second pour more substantial). The nose is initially sooo hoppy... mesmerising piney-resiny citrusy-grassy hops, but later the more stouty aspects come forward, like chocolate and coffee. The flavour continues along the same lines - it’s so roasty-chocolaty-sweet yet with a huge bitter kick, accentuated by the alcohol. And I mean there’s heat in the throat. So smooth, soft, and full in the mouth. So good, so good.

P.S. - I suspect I would’ve given it at least 4.5 a year back.

Pours a dark brown colour with a big creamy-bubbly light-mocha coloured head, everlasting, leaving creamy lacing. Big dark fruit aromas with plums and spices, covering the roasted malts. And eventually, hints of vanilla softening things. This keeps on changing and some grass shows in the nose. The taste definitely is where the hops appears stronger. Even at the start, fading to show some coffee in the finish. Kind of a sharp, bitter entree. A pretty hoppy tasting Imperial Stout that goes down nicely... if this is your thing. The head is stunning for a bottled brew.

Black color with nice tan head. Aroma is dry, malty, a bit yeasty, coffee. A bit booze. Taste is similar, not too soothing, but not bad. Silky mouthfeel, slight burn towards the end. Not bad, but there’s better.
