Originally brewed in the early 19th century for export from Britain to the imperial court of Russiaís Catherine the Great, imperial stouts are characterized by their dark color & full body. This style features a rich, malty sweetness coupled with aggressive hopping (especially in American interpretations). Notes of dried fruit as well as roasted malt flavors are typically present.

What a unique beer: Not that overly impressive techniques, ingredients or unexpected results culminated in such a fantastic beer, but rather that Iíve never tasted anything like it. This is a hop monster, which leads me to believe I have a very fresh bottle on-hand. The aroma on this is piny/floral hops and licorice. Thatís it. Thatís all I get. Flavor is more of the same. Piny, bitter hop bite, dark fruits (from the hops), licorice and a hint of dark chocolate. Hints of mint and Jaegermeister??? The finish is dry and resiny. This beer tastes like a damn Christmas tree (makes mental note to pick up a couple extra bottles for the holiday). Body is medium. No alcohol burn. Aftertaste is almost asphalt-like, but not in an offensive way. Iím sure itís roasty, but almost all aspects of imperial stout are masked by the copious amount of hops. This is the definition of an ager. Iíd hope the coffee, caramel and chocolate flavors would eventually come through in a couple years, but maybe not as this puts any "Black IPA" to shame, IMO. A force to be reckoned with, but with a price tag to love. $5.50/22 oz.. Pretty good now. Should be fantastic with age on it.

22 oz bottle. Bottled on Feb 2015. 12.5%. Thanks Timo Aaah! Dark reddish brown color with a tiny tan head. Dark hops, sweetness, mild coffee, roasted malt and ashy dryness in the aroma. The flavor is hops, moderate bitterness, roasted malt, darkness and ashy dryness. Balanced, softly carbonated, rich and flavorsome. 12.5% is not that evident. Big beer indeed. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Flavor is bitter malts with roast notes, licorice, coffee and faint syrup, mild hops too. Some alcohol burn at the end, not disturbing. Very nice and refined.

Bottle, 2015 expiry date. Black pour with a beige head. Aroma is roasty malt, a little sweet with lots of dark chocolate, some coffee and a hint of raisin. Taste is rich chocolate and coffee, hints of raisin and cherry, a little lighter body than expected but probably appropriate given this is a few years old. Really delicious, rich and balanced.
