Originally brewed in the early 19th century for export from Britain to the imperial court of Russias Catherine the Great, imperial stouts are characterized by their dark color & full body. This style features a rich, malty sweetness coupled with aggressive hopping (especially in American interpretations). Notes of dried fruit as well as roasted malt flavors are typically present.

What a unique beer: Not that overly impressive techniques, ingredients or unexpected results culminated in such a fantastic beer, but rather that Ive never tasted anything like it. This is a hop monster, which leads me to believe I have a very fresh bottle on-hand. The aroma on this is piny/floral hops and licorice. Thats it. Thats all I get. Flavor is more of the same. Piny, bitter hop bite, dark fruits (from the hops), licorice and a hint of dark chocolate. Hints of mint and Jaegermeister??? The finish is dry and resiny. This beer tastes like a damn Christmas tree (makes mental note to pick up a couple extra bottles for the holiday). Body is medium. No alcohol burn. Aftertaste is almost asphalt-like, but not in an offensive way. Im sure its roasty, but almost all aspects of imperial stout are masked by the copious amount of hops. This is the definition of an ager. Id hope the coffee, caramel and chocolate flavors would eventually come through in a couple years, but maybe not as this puts any "Black IPA" to shame, IMO. A force to be reckoned with, but with a price tag to love. $5.50/22 oz.. Pretty good now. Should be fantastic with age on it.

Aromas of dark roast, charred malts, raisin, dark chocolate, toffee, figs, dark grape juice and slight oak. Appearance is pitch black with a thin brown foam. Taste is very raisin, red grape, merlot, cabernet forward. Other notes of dark cacao, toffee, tree bark, funky dark malts, roasted malts and finishes dry with big dark fannie mae cacao chocolate. Overall, this is a good imperial stout but its too cacao and raisin forward for my taste.

650 ml bottle from the LCBO.

Appearance: Pours a dark black with a couple fingers of tan head which leaves quite a bit of dense lacing.

Aroma: Smoky wood, malt, some hops.

Flavours: Malt, chocolate milk, moca, black licorice, charcoal and some hops.

Mouthfeel: Rich and creamy with lighter carbonation.

Overall: I like this stout. The subtle nuances of smoke and hop aromas come together with loads of chocolate milk, coffee and black licorice flavours.

Sampled from a bomber bottle, this bottle has 10.5% abv. printed on it, this beer poured a dark brown / black and gave a creamy, dark tan one to two finger cover that receded to a ring and brown film of bubbles, the nose had aromas of roasted malt (but not intense dark roasted malt), chocolate, a little coffee, caramel and malt sweetness, grass and citrus hops in the background, the flavors were roasted malt, citrus hops, chocolate, caramel and brown sugar sweetness, the finish had some hop bitterness that lingered on the tongue, the mouth feel was medium full with average carbonation, it was creamy and gave a touch of warmth on the throat, it had a smooth roasted malt and chocolate nose, the flavor had a good hop presence with roasted malt and chocolate, probably one of the hopiest impys I have had to date, even though I found the abundance of hops interesting in this beer, I prefer a less hoppy beer with generous roasted malt, chocolate and molasses, I will age another bottle and see how it drinks.

Bottle. Pours nearly black with crime colored head that is slow to form and dissipates to the edges quickly. Slight off-putting aroma. Mild heat and nice balanced coffee flavor. I bit light in the shorts. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

22oz bottle. Pours black with a creamy tan head. Not too sweet with a nice bitterness. Notes of coffee with more subtle flavors of dark fruit and chocolate. Seems to be more hop notes in this one as compared to many other impy stouts out there.

22 oz bottle into a snifter. Very dark with a thick consistency. Really nice chocolate and coffee nose. Head dissipates quickly. Bakers chocolate the overwhelming flavor. No alcohol flavor. This is good, very drinkable.

22 ounce bottle into snifter; bottled in 2/2015, 10.5%. Pours pitch black color with a 2 finger fairly dense dark brown head with solid retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty lacing clings around the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, toast, dark bread, molasses, raisin, cherry, licorice, grapefruit, citrus rind, pine, light smoke/char, and herbal/roasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/roasted/bready malt and moderate citrus/piney hop notes; with great strength. Taste of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, toast, dark bread, molasses, raisin, cherry, licorice, grapefruit, citrus rind, pine, light smoke/char, and herbal/roasted earthiness. Good amount of roast/char and piney bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, toast, dark bread, molasses, raisin, cherry, licorice, grapefruit, citrus rind, pine, light smoke/char, and herbal/roasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Damn nice complexity and robustness of big dark/roasted/bready malt and citrus/piney hop flavors; with a good roasted bitterness/sweetness and hop balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Light carbonation and fairly full bodied; with a very smooth, creamy, and fairly sticky/chalky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warmth lingering after the finish. Overall this is a damn nice fresh Russian imperial stout style. All around great robustness, complexity, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt and citrus/piney hop flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the big ABV. A very enjoyable offering.

Pours jet black, and a fluffy tan head. Aroma includes chocolate, coffee, fertilizer, clove, banana, and roasted oats. Tasting notes include rich chocolate, coffee, nuts, woody tannins, and a slight bitter finish. Pretty good, but it Tastes and smells a little to chemical for my taste.
