COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Originally brewed in the early 19th century for export from Britain to the imperial court of Russia’s Catherine the Great, imperial stouts are characterized by their dark color & full body. This style features a rich, malty sweetness coupled with aggressive hopping (especially in American interpretations). Notes of dried fruit as well as roasted malt flavors are typically present.

Pours black with a large dark tan head. Aroma is of roasted malts, alcohol, and molasses. Very hoppy for an Imperial Stout, but it is to be expected from Smuttynose. Great sweet flavor up front with a dry hop kick and alcohol at the finish. This is different from most Imperials I have had, but I think they are on to something. Definitely worth trying.

22 oz bottle. Bottled on Feb 2015. 12.5%. Thanks Timo Aaah! Dark reddish brown color with a tiny tan head. Dark hops, sweetness, mild coffee, roasted malt and ashy dryness in the aroma. The flavor is hops, moderate bitterness, roasted malt, darkness and ashy dryness. Balanced, softly carbonated, rich and flavorsome. 12.5% is not that evident. Big beer indeed. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pours black color with a small head. Aroma is coffee and roasted malts, cocoa, faint vanilla, cola notes, licorice and maybe even some salmiac. Flavor is bitter malts with roast notes, licorice, coffee and faint syrup, mild hops too. Some alcohol burn at the end, not disturbing. Very nice and refined.

Bottle, 2015 expiry date. Black pour with a beige head. Aroma is roasty malt, a little sweet with lots of dark chocolate, some coffee and a hint of raisin. Taste is rich chocolate and coffee, hints of raisin and cherry, a little lighter body than expected but probably appropriate given this is a few years old. Really delicious, rich and balanced.
