COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Smuttynose IPA is a physical salute to the glory of the American hop grower. The citrusy hop flavor coming from a mixture of Simcoe and Santiams is pleasantly balanced by a smooth bitterness from the Amarillo hops. The beer itself is light bodied and crisp with a golden color that will throw a slight haze, as we bottle it unfiltered. At 65 IBU’s, this is definitely not a training-wheels IPA, but is meant for hop lovers looking to satisfy their craving in a way that’s not easy to find. We think they’ll be quite pleased.

Pour is a deep gold color with a white head. Nose is of pine and citrus. Taste is dominated by earthier hops however, and the finish is much different than what would be expected from an IPA, a bit dryer and more bitter than tolerable.

Awesome label. Smells great. Very piney. Well balanced with malt and a decent hop blast. I’ve been chipping through a sampler pack tonight and this is pretty good. Wish I had gotten all IPA.

Aroma is strongly citrus hops. The taste is slightly citrus, but consists of more earthy hops. The bitterness is pretty strong and leaves a dry mouth feel. Overall I’m not an IPA fan and this isn’t the best one I have had.

pours golden orange with a small white head and lots of sediment. Aroma is crisp and citric. taste is yeasty, with notes or citric hops primarily grapefruit and caramel. finish is full, juicy and bitter. a very enjoyable IPA.

Damn good IPA, a real credit to it’s style with big hops and a nice bitterness.

Bottle. Clear amber with a short foamy off-white head. Aroma is perfumy flowery with piss and caramel. Passionfruit, mangoseed, resiny and some slight yeast. Taste is dry hard bitter with a perfumy character. Caramel, some faint cookie notes, grass and perfume. Served way too "warm". Medium body, small massaging bubbles. Don’t know if it was me or the condition of the beer but like Sir Limpsalot also felt there was something not very pleasant with the beer. Got a bit better after a while but the beginning was horrible.

Grasiger, deutlich herber Hopfenantrunk. Später wird der Hopfen auch blumig, die Herbe ist Vergleichsweise gering, die Bitterkeit moderat. Hierbei wird die Hopfenherbe mit der Zeit aber astringent, der Hopfen verringert sich gleichzeitig etwas. Hintergründig ist eine minimale Whiskeynote interessant. Zum Ende recht trocken, intensiv hopfig. Gut! 8/10/11/12/6/11

Bottle at Oliwer Twist in Stockholm, May 2011. Orange/amber with a medium white head. Not that exciting to be honest. Too weak and too little character. Light body and not that fruity. Old bottle?
