COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Smuttynose IPA is a physical salute to the glory of the American hop grower. The citrusy hop flavor coming from a mixture of Simcoe and Santiams is pleasantly balanced by a smooth bitterness from the Amarillo hops. The beer itself is light bodied and crisp with a golden color that will throw a slight haze, as we bottle it unfiltered. At 65 IBU’s, this is definitely not a training-wheels IPA, but is meant for hop lovers looking to satisfy their craving in a way that’s not easy to find. We think they’ll be quite pleased.

Spotted this on tap a couple of times and was very impressed with it. Being a hop-head, it certainly fulfilled that need. Aromas of grapefruit along with some earthiness. Bottles have a lot of seidment in them. Color is a ruddy gold and it purs with a thick head that you could float a cap on. Flavor is very well balanced between hop bitterness on the roof of your mouth and good, juicy hop flavors. More fruity in the flavor than in the aroma.

Golden/brassy body with a little sunny orange in the middle and some suspended sediment. Very large, white head. Smells like pine: dry cones, needles and sweet pineapple and apricots. Very refined, everything is placed properly in the nose. Taste is very big, sweet and tart. Begins sweet pineapple then hits with big grapefruit hops. Exact grapefruit taste then becomes souring. Very interesting and unique hop palate that stands by itself with no comparison. Aftertaste is dry citrus, like eating a grapefruit peel. Nice sweet/sour/tart balance. Quality brew.

Bright and slightly hazy orange color, medium white head. Nice aroma, fruity hops (grapefruit, peach) with some earthiness. Same goes for the flavor, sharp at first with a well balanced and almost complex bitterness in the finish. Medium-full body for the style. Completely solid from start to finish and thoroughly enjoyable.

Pours a full golden with a frothy thick white head and thin lacing. Aroma is bold and hoppy with some caramel malt and a touch of piney grapefruit. Starts semi-sweet and citrusy turning more dry and bitter toward a crisp finish. A little too dry and bitter for an IPA, but a decent beer nonetheless. Many thanks to whaleman for this brew.

Bottled, Stockholm Beer Festival. Cloudy dark yellow. Flowery apricot nose. Mild, smooth palate. Long, flowery, hopbitter finish. Not as sticky as some.

Deep hazy apricot hue. Bottle-conditioned. Small white head doesn’t keep up. Grassy nose with a faint honeyish malt touch. Tangy citrus fruit, very coniferous. Piney finish, very bitter, coating dryness. Mostly simple. Nice mouthfeel, lively carbonation, medium body. Good development all-around, very tasty, but what makes it better than a bièropholie, arbor sacred cow or anchor liberty, I can’t tell. You’ll like it better than me I guess, it’s good, but it’s the first time I have it and I feel like I had it 10 times+ already. Were I a hophead, I'd shoot for something just a tad bigger in hops (not that this is any weak). Now I'm not and I'd hope for more malt or yeast originality. A beer for a market I don't understand.

Lovely cloudy deeper amber. Light smells in the nose of grapefruit, and flowers. Malty and hoppy, too many malts in this IPA for me to go crazy for it, but very nice to drink... I will have more of these.

Orange. Fairly subtle nose, not much going on here, with notes of orange rinds, grapefruit and brown pine needles. Extreme bitterness throughout the palate. This is a big, bad boy India Pale Ale and I am simply amazed at its complete transformation from about 45 to 55 degrees. I was about to slam it, until it warmed up. Sticky, fruity, dominating hop flavor. Notes of grapefruit, peels, pine, pineapple, lemon and orange. Full, bodacious mouthfeel. Lingering bitterness. My only complaint: The finish is a little to dry.
