Smuttynose IPA is a physical salute to the glory of the American hop grower. The citrusy hop flavor coming from a mixture of Simcoe and Santiams is pleasantly balanced by a smooth bitterness from the Amarillo hops. The beer itself is light bodied and crisp with a golden color that will throw a slight haze, as we bottle it unfiltered. At 65 IBU’s, this is definitely not a training-wheels IPA, but is meant for hop lovers looking to satisfy their craving in a way that’s not easy to find. We think they’ll be quite pleased.

On tap at the Gingerman NYC. Very nice IPA with a delicious hop and a decent enough malt backing. My only complaint is that it was overly dry and therefore slow to drink. The flavors were much more alive than in the bottle...last third was spent wondering what to order next from the 70 taps...

Hazy deep blond color; creamy head; sticky lace. The aroma well mixes quality hops and some malt sweetness; the fruity side includes oranges first, and light grapefruit too. Correct body, with strong dry toffee flavor; the mouthfeel is quite smooth; the bitterness is very high, and the hops brings in a lot of resins first, but also bitter oranges. Very solid and powerful IPA, full of character.

Amber color. The aroma has some nice hops and some Fragola grape touch. Medium body, strong bitterness, well hoppy, aromatic European hops as well… Very long final, a bit dry.

Pours a cloudy yellow/orange color with a small white head. Nice citrus aroma, with grapefruit dominating the nose. Light to medium bodied. Smooth texture with grapefruit, citrus, and a touch of sweet malt. The finish is a good lingering bite of hops. It’s everything I like in an IPA.

Has a good citrus aroma. Cloudy copper body with decent head that left decent lacing. Citrus grapefruit flavor with hop bite and some sourness. Good enjoyable beer to have after a hard days work.

Cask (gravity dispense), GBBF, August 2005. After the restraint of the Berkshire Lost Sailor tried immediately before, this one is a much more full-on experience. This is certainly no shrinking violet. Hops imbue every element of this beer. Massive grapefruit aroma. Bags of obvious Cascade. More grapefruit (leaves this time) in the palate. Quite sharp. Nor exactly subtle but very impressive.

Bottle from dirtymike. Pours slightly viscous, with a sunset-orange hue. Small ivory head. Aroma is a combination of grapefruit and herb. Flavor is a dash of grapefruit, orange, and a touch of tangerine. The hops bite is a bit subdued, but it is there. Alcohol is hidden quite nicely. Mouthfeel is a bit thin, but coats nicely. A pleasant brew.

Nice deep orange pour with foamy, if a bit small, head. The aroma was intense with citrus, mainly grapefruit so I was expecting a strong sweet undercurrent to the hops. Not so. The flavor is strongly of bitter grapefruit with a hint of sweetness for balance. There is also a nice, crisp mouthfeel. and medium body. Thought this a nicely balanced IPA.

Hazy medium orange yellow with suspended particulates. Large rocky white head. Sweet floral and citrus notes, probably Amarillo, in the aroma. Piney and floral hop character up front. Subdued slightly by sweet and smooth malt undertones. Residual bitterness and some astringency in the finish with tinges of caramel malt. Mouthfeel is very smooth, almost creamy.
