Smuttynose IPA is a physical salute to the glory of the American hop grower. The citrusy hop flavor coming from a mixture of Simcoe and Santiams is pleasantly balanced by a smooth bitterness from the Amarillo hops. The beer itself is light bodied and crisp with a golden color that will throw a slight haze, as we bottle it unfiltered. At 65 IBUís, this is definitely not a training-wheels IPA, but is meant for hop lovers looking to satisfy their craving in a way thatís not easy to find. We think theyíll be quite pleased.

Bottle. Best before: 09/06. Pours a hazy orange/gold with tons of floaties and a thick, creamy light-tan head that leaves nice rings of lacing. Lots of grapefruits and oranges in the piney aroma. Medium body, yet somewhat lacking in substance. Crisp. Just a touch of caramel upfront. Very harshly hopped and one-sided. Definitely not a complaint, just an observation. Spicy and tingly. Terrifically bitter, dry finish that lingers.

Bottle. Pours a nice clear copper with a tight white head. Unfortunately, thereís a lot of sediment and itís a fairly ugly looking beer at this point....my mistake though, as I didnít realize the beer was bottle conditioned until I double-checked the label. Aroma is primarily pine and resines...not overpowering, but the hops are definitely in there. Flavor: Upfront, itís surprisingly bitter....mellows a tad, but follows thru all the way into the finish. Hops (piney) dominate, leaving the malt backbone in the dust. Decidedly bitter. Overall: A very nice beer....reminds me of DFHís 60 min. A side by side is probably in order. Balance is a little out of whack, but if you like extreme bitter with a hoppy aftertaste, this is your beer.

Enjoyed out of the bottle. Classic IPA nose: citrusy and piney. The mouthfeel was electric, very hoppy and spicy. After the first sip, I felt completely rejuvenated and wanted more of this elixir. And more I got, by drinking the bottle way too fast for its 6.6% abv. I loved this hoppy treat. I ate some spicy cajun-flavored pizza while enjoying Smuttynose IPA, which was a match made in heaven. Almost as good as Bellís Two Hearted.

Not a bad IPA. Poured a golden yellow color with a hoppy floral aroma. Carbonation was observable while in the glass. Mouthfeel was carbonated with a very mild hops presence. For the hop lovers, this may have been a tad disappointing, but I enjoyed it.

Bottle. Had this one after Ballast Pointís Big Eye IPA and this one just didnít stand up. Donít know if it was as fresh as the BP version, but it didnít hold a candle to it. Nondescript hop nose and flavor. Boring.

Pilsner glass. This IPA has a very plesent aroma, with hints of fruits and hops. The appearance was almost a golden-yellow and had a bright white head. The flavor, however was not as sharp and hoppy as I had thought, and there was little aftertaste like most IPAís I have enjoyed. Still, this IPA was very enjoyable and not a bad buy.

UPDATED: OCT 3, 2006 12 oz bottle
Aroma / Appearance - An aggressive pour yielded a huge foamy bubbly head that lingered over the transparent hazel brown body. Scents of pine, spruce, citrus and banana cream presented themselves to my eager nose.
Flavor / Palate - A strong bitterness presents itself on the first sip with the taste of spruced hops. This bitterness stays around for a long time before finally fading; it feels like someone liquified tree bark and captured the woody tones. A grapefruit aftertaste caps a solid and enjoyable session beer. If I were a hophead, I might have enjoyed this one more.

12 Oz. Bottle. A high thin wafting away aroma of lightly creamed butter hops, with notes of stinging plants and light citrus. Pour of furiously bubbling light golden, with yellow fringes. A head of silky lacing white. Flavor packs a very respectable hop punch, with a one-two of rich fresh squeeze droplets of Yuzu and creamy candied background malts. In the hops, a good balance of the lighter more earthy grass varieties, mingled with an effervescent dose of floral citrus bouquet. Well done. The heavily offered light sweet malts, keep a clean crisp profile with an excellent body. In the palate, a crisp tartness followed by a chip of lawnmower bitterness. Finishes with light peach, however the grassy hops glower with a heavy bitterness that takes away on the smack. Overall, pretty darn good. Iím off to join the fellows on the bottle.

Bottle: Cloudy orange. Very citrusy aroma. Flavor followed up with more citrus, grapefruit. Dry bitter finish. Enjoyable beer, Iíde like to try it on draft as I would all solid IPAs.

Sample at Julioís beer festival:orange body. Aroma is grapefruity and citrusy hops. Balance here was good. Not all that interesting, but no flaws.
