COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Smuttynose IPA is a physical salute to the glory of the American hop grower. The citrusy hop flavor coming from a mixture of Simcoe and Santiams is pleasantly balanced by a smooth bitterness from the Amarillo hops. The beer itself is light bodied and crisp with a golden color that will throw a slight haze, as we bottle it unfiltered. At 65 IBU’s, this is definitely not a training-wheels IPA, but is meant for hop lovers looking to satisfy their craving in a way that’s not easy to find. We think they’ll be quite pleased.

Pours a cloudy yellow with a fizzy white head. Some solid residues noticed in the pour. Aroma is malty and citrusy, but in tastingthe malts die out quickly and the finish has a solid bitter kick. This is a very drinkable, well-considered IPA.

Bottle. Poured a hazy peachish color. Fair white head fades moderately and leaves some lacing. Aroma is slightly skunked and lacking in hops. Taste is a touch resinous, slightly acidic. Not a very nice mix of malt and hop. I am hoping that this is a bad bottle.

UPDATED: MAR 16, 2005 Pours a nice orange cloudy head with good lacing at the top. The head is creamy and stays that way. Very nice aroma with citrus, malts, graitfruit, apricot and a bit of orange. The malts are quite pleasant in this beer. The taste has the Pale Ale in it with more hops added to it. There is more citrus and more sweetness as well. The finish is a little bitter, but not too bitter. This is an excellent IPA.

Nice pour with a good head, orange/amber color but very cloudy -lots of suspended particles. Taste is not incredibly hoppy, and has several hints of fruit. This could be a great bear if they could clean up the appearance.

Besides the fact that Smuttynose has amazing pictures on their labels, it turns out they make some damn good beers too. I was thinking this would be a typical yellowish IPA without much malt flavor. I was dead wrong. This is a serious beer, nice cloudy beautiful orange-brown with deep citrusey malt flavors and more hop flavors than you can identify in your mouth at one time. If the apocalypse comes, I will have 10 cases of this stuff in my fallout shelter.

12 oz bottle: pous a golden straw color. murky. the yeast made this beer looklike a snow globe. pleasnt citrus aromas. nice malt base up from with a resiny ciitrus hop bite on the end. hop flavor was a little lacking. could have been and old bottle. would like to try again.

Poured a murky amber with a fizzy white head. Grassy hop aroma. Taste has a good hop kick but a strong malt backbone, making it very easy to drink. Carbonation is rather light. A nicely crafted IPA.

This was quite good. Smuttynose has some really good products. This poured a hazy amber/orange with a strong off-white head. The nose was strongly grapefruit/hoppy with some pine, a yeasty notes. Medium bodied, it felt good in the mouth. Flavor was good, robust hops. Refreshing, clean, crisp. Would certainly seek out more of this fine brew.

(12 oz bottle: Chevy Chase Liquors in Washington, DC) Moderately flavorful, understated IPA, with a solid citrusy hops contribution that is partially balanced by a mild, slightly bready maltiness. Mildly sweet up front with bitterness taking over in the finish. The aroma is a little hoppy, but not terribly aromatic. Medium bodied, somewhat crisp on the palate. Light gold color is surprisingly pale. The beer is fairly cloudy, and there’s a shitload of fine particles suspended in the beer. The head is small and white in color, but retains a thin layer over much of the surface. Lacing is sporadic. A well-made beer, certainly pleasant enough, but the malt bill is just too light for me to rate this IPA very high.

Amber orange in color with a thin head of white. A classic bitter IPA with a grassy citrusy feel and full of hops from start to finish. The flavor seems a bit one sided here, though. Many other IPAs have seemed much better. Not exceptional.
