COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Smuttynose IPA is a physical salute to the glory of the American hop grower. The citrusy hop flavor coming from a mixture of Simcoe and Santiams is pleasantly balanced by a smooth bitterness from the Amarillo hops. The beer itself is light bodied and crisp with a golden color that will throw a slight haze, as we bottle it unfiltered. At 65 IBU’s, this is definitely not a training-wheels IPA, but is meant for hop lovers looking to satisfy their craving in a way that’s not easy to find. We think they’ll be quite pleased.

This is a very decent IPA. Tastes of grapefruit. Very hoppy, good aftertaste. Good head that will be there till the end. All the flavor hides the ABV, so be careful! You won’t be disappointed with this one.

Bottle, at a Smuttynose tasting at Charles Street liquor in Beacon Hill, MA. Fairly tranlucent orange body, good puffy white head on pour. Lots of lemon and orange zest in the nose with a hint of grapefruit. Body drank very light, weightless almost. Lots of bitter hops and strong pine needle flavors. Very dry aftertaste, not quite as bitter as I expected. The flavor seemed to wash down as quick as the beer. Loads of potential, but not much kick and not much staying power. Fairly average for a good IPA. I definitely recomend it, but not something to get too excited about.

New arrival in Madison, WI. Nice to see it. The body is a dark gold with ahint of haze and a thin white head. The aroma is fresh and brigh with some grapefruit, old toffee, iced tea and some earthy grass. All nice smells in this one. The taste is more in your face than I expected. Lots of grapefruit and some burnt bread crust. There is also some bitter grass. A little much for me. I would like a bit of malt balance, but those that love hops should enjoy this one.

Draft. Good, white head with lots of lacing in its wake. Small bubble carbonation. Amazing floral, grapefruit aromas. Hops also confront you on the biting first contact, and carry through the beer. Aggressive hopping and other elements all in their place, so a nice balance. Dry finish leaves, again, a lot of hop to contend with. A good, grabby IPA.

Draught - Dark golden body; white head fast away, beautiful laces; Quite big, super hoppy nose: Flowers, apricot; great carbonation in bitter, but well balanced body; Super dry when swallowed, it almost dries out your throat (like eating dry hop); Very, very long finish full of hop, but a little to sweet. Not a perfect relation between the super dry and bitter part from the hop and the sweetness of the finish.

12 oz bottle. Faintly hazed orange with a white head; lacing remains. Light floral and citrus. Sweet orange morphs to grapefruit and stays bitter for a while. Medium body, fine carb.

Bought in a Trader Joe’s in Brookline, MA. Much to my surprise, this IPA was very tasty. The aroma was very fresh and bursting with hops. Not the biggest nor the best IPA around, but for once my expectations were bested by a beer. A very nice smooth beer with a big hop finish.
