COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Smuttynose IPA is a physical salute to the glory of the American hop grower. The citrusy hop flavor coming from a mixture of Simcoe and Santiams is pleasantly balanced by a smooth bitterness from the Amarillo hops. The beer itself is light bodied and crisp with a golden color that will throw a slight haze, as we bottle it unfiltered. At 65 IBUís, this is definitely not a training-wheels IPA, but is meant for hop lovers looking to satisfy their craving in a way thatís not easy to find. We think theyíll be quite pleased.

Bottle from dirtymike. Pours slightly viscous, with a sunset-orange hue. Small ivory head. Aroma is a combination of grapefruit and herb. Flavor is a dash of grapefruit, orange, and a touch of tangerine. The hops bite is a bit subdued, but it is there. Alcohol is hidden quite nicely. Mouthfeel is a bit thin, but coats nicely. A pleasant brew.

Nice deep orange pour with foamy, if a bit small, head. The aroma was intense with citrus, mainly grapefruit so I was expecting a strong sweet undercurrent to the hops. Not so. The flavor is strongly of bitter grapefruit with a hint of sweetness for balance. There is also a nice, crisp mouthfeel. and medium body. Thought this a nicely balanced IPA.

Hazy medium orange yellow with suspended particulates. Large rocky white head. Sweet floral and citrus notes, probably Amarillo, in the aroma. Piney and floral hop character up front. Subdued slightly by sweet and smooth malt undertones. Residual bitterness and some astringency in the finish with tinges of caramel malt. Mouthfeel is very smooth, almost creamy.

Large head melts into whipped, foamy mounds. Lots of yeast in suspension, even after trying to decant. Floral aroma is backed by nice toasty/bready malt. The body seems more citrusy with a sweet caramel middle and a great bitter finish. Nicely done all around.

Bottle (12oz). Poured a oily-hazy gold-orange with a small white head and quite a slick of black yeasties at the bottom of the pour. Aroma heavy on the grapefruit/citrus hops, some sweet malt notes and a touch of tart cider. Taste is VERY grapefruity-hoppy, but fresh and juicy, some spruce and oaky notes; starts almost sweet (juicy sweet) and the hops build to a moderate crescendo - long finish, borderline harsh hoppy by the end. Mouthfeel is pretty full for an IPA, very smooth, moderately lively. Mouthfeel is bitter and a touch acidic, but nice. Very good fresh IPA, even for me, a non hop-head.

Bottle. Deep orange color with little head; lots of sediment. Initial floral and grapefruit hop aroma settles into slightly sour grapefruit and almost vegetable characteristics. Flavor is very hop-forward: big grapefruit citrus burst on the tongue, followed by a substantial medium-bodied malt and a great deal of bitterness in the middle and finish. Lots of pine resin/ hop tackiness lingering throughout; the aftertaste is quite sour. Mouthfeel is very creamy and smooth, almost like itís hypercarbonated. This really isnít that far removed from the Big A, to my surprise and enjoyment. A fantastic IPA!

Cask (GBBF): Clear gold with small white head. Nice floral nose, loads of hops. Sweet honey and fruits. Loads of bitter clean citric hops and lychee flavours too! Medium-full bodied, and quite tasty.

Cask@GBBF 2005. Golden beer with a light head. The aroma is light and only quite dry. The flavour is strong, initially dry and quite corrosive. Overall a strong IPA that is probably too strong and dry.
