COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Smuttynose IPA is a physical salute to the glory of the American hop grower. The citrusy hop flavor coming from a mixture of Simcoe and Santiams is pleasantly balanced by a smooth bitterness from the Amarillo hops. The beer itself is light bodied and crisp with a golden color that will throw a slight haze, as we bottle it unfiltered. At 65 IBU’s, this is definitely not a training-wheels IPA, but is meant for hop lovers looking to satisfy their craving in a way that’s not easy to find. We think they’ll be quite pleased.

Orange-brown color with good opacity, and much fine foam. The IPA, however, does not smell like an IPA at all. Moderate soapy hop aromas come through. The beginning part is very bitter, little hoppy, overall very medical. The aftertaste is very long drawn bitter and slightly metallic. The further course is not really better. The IPA is overly bitter, but there is no trace of aroma hops. Unfortunately failed!

12 oz bottle. Best by July 2010. Pours into my American pint a hazy orange/yellow with a slightly off-white slowly dissipating head that leaves nice lacing. The smell is robust for the style, I’m tired of running into IPAs that have a stale malt scent. There is a nice tropical smell (passion fruit, pineapple) to this one along with some sweet citrus (grapefruit) over a sweet malt backing. The taste isn’t as robust but it is very nice. It has a good piney/grapefruit bitterness and a sweet malty tropical body. The mouthfeel is right on and this one is immensely drinkable. This is one of the best east coast ipas out there. UPDATED: MAR 3, 2011 12 ounce bottle. Pours hazy orange-amber color with a 2 finger off white head with amazing retention that reduces to a thick cap. Not too much lacing present. Aromas is kind of weak on the pour, but it improved as I made my way into the glass. Aromas of citrus, floral, caramel, and pine with some spiciness. Taste of strong citrus, caramel, and pine; with a sharp bitterness present on the finish. The bitterness and spiciness lingers for a while after the finish. Alcohol well hidden, and only a very slight warming noticed after the finish. This is a great IPA, definitely a bit more hop forward in flavor and the amount of bitterness, but also well balanced with the flavors. Medium body and fairly high carbonation, has a nice sharp feel to it. The nice amount of bitterness and flavor in this IPA makes me an instant fan. Excellent.

Pours a clear golden color with a white head that disappears fairly quick. Aroma is of straw and bread. Flavor is similar to aroma. I was expecting hops or something less intense than their imperial IPA. Not sure how this could be an IPA. Label said it was good before July of 11.

Bottle. Pours a hazy copper/orange color with a frothy eggshell colored head. Aroma is quite hoppy with notes of citrus, grapefruit, pine and caramel malts. Flavor is also hoppy, with alot of bitterness. I first get the citrus and grapefruit which turns into a very bitter and piney flavor. I also get the caramel malt and some bready malts. The body is light to medium, with a powdery dry mouthfeel. Overall a solid IPA, though it might be too bitter for some.

On tap at Zeno’s. Orange with a thin white head. Aroma is citrus. Flavor is citrus and bitter. Pretty good but one-dimensional.

Non mi ha soddisfatto. L’ho trovata eccessivamente secca e sbilanciata. Troppo amaro il finale. Se dovessimo votare l’etichetta sarebbe prima assoluta.

UPDATED: MAR 31, 2011 Super simcoe flavors, very hoppy body, bitter finish. This could use some more malts to add complexity and background to the hop attack
