COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Smuttynose IPA is a physical salute to the glory of the American hop grower. The citrusy hop flavor coming from a mixture of Simcoe and Santiams is pleasantly balanced by a smooth bitterness from the Amarillo hops. The beer itself is light bodied and crisp with a golden color that will throw a slight haze, as we bottle it unfiltered. At 65 IBU’s, this is definitely not a training-wheels IPA, but is meant for hop lovers looking to satisfy their craving in a way that’s not easy to find. We think they’ll be quite pleased.

12 oz. bottle in a snifter. Hazy golden pour with a decent head. Strong hop aroma. Somewhat grassy. Nice bitter hop flavor, but finishes fairly smooth. Not a big fan of hoppy beers, but I’m starting to appreciate them more. Solid IPA.

Hazy golden color, mid sized white head leaving thick lacing. The nose is wonderful. Fresh hops and a big citrusy melon aroma. This is how an IPA should smell. The flavor also contains a fruity hoppiness that is to die for. Big grapefruit and orange flavor dance along with a sharp hoppy bitterness. Superb body and texture completes this amazing IPA.

Bottled; color-golden and cloudy, foam-white, smell-citrus and heavy on hops, taste-strong with original light sweetness and fizzy with long lasting bitter aftertaste.

Bottle. Pours muddy gold with white head. Nose has citrus, cat box, earthy floral notes along with a sweet caramel malt aroma. Flavors are initially sweet, cotton candy and caramel notes, seems like crystal malt at high levels, powdery hop pellets leave traces of orange citrus, grapefruit, and cat pee. Medium bodied. Use of crystal is off putting but I don’t know how fresh this is but doesn’t seem like it was bottled in the last 30days.

Bottle @ Odense Tasting, Jan 2011. Pours cloudy orange with a small creamy white head. Grapefruit and peach. Dry and bitter. Medium bodied. I liked the EPA which was a APA more.

Pours a hazy golden-amber color; two finger head with great retention and beautiful lacing, all the way down the glass. Traditional IPA smell: some citrus and pine hops alongside some caramel and biscuity malts. Slightly yeasty notes, and a floral aroma comes out with warmth. As far as taste, malt flavors stand out here more than those of the hops, but hop bitterness is stronger than malt sweetness (much to my enjoyment). Flavors include caramel, toffee, biscuits; grapefruit, more grapefruit, and spruce. Moderate body/carbonation; mostly smooth, with a dry finish.

12 oz bottle. Poured a hazy orange copper with a nice head. Aroma: pine, grapefruit, hops, mild malt. Taste: big pine, grapefruit, understated but solid malt backbone. Nice bitter bite in this one. Medium-ish body. Overall a solid, well made IPA.
