COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Smuttynose IPA is a physical salute to the glory of the American hop grower. The citrusy hop flavor coming from a mixture of Simcoe and Santiams is pleasantly balanced by a smooth bitterness from the Amarillo hops. The beer itself is light bodied and crisp with a golden color that will throw a slight haze, as we bottle it unfiltered. At 65 IBU’s, this is definitely not a training-wheels IPA, but is meant for hop lovers looking to satisfy their craving in a way that’s not easy to find. We think they’ll be quite pleased.

This is a nice IPA brewed w/ the now classic combo of Simco and Amarillo hops. It is orange golden w/ a long lived head of medium bubbles that leaves nice rings of lace on the side of the glass. Despite using now common hops, the nose on this is pretty interesting. It initially has a piny almost mossy character which fades into a strong tropical fruit sweetness. The beer is actually a bit sweet once you taste it which helps emphasize this fruitiness. This is very much a full-bodied and juicy textured beer w/ fine, mild carbonation. It strikes me as just enough on the heavy side to stop it from being perfect. It finishes w/ firm citrus-rind bitterness and a lingering note of pineapple and orange. For those who love fruity hop bombs that aren’t all that dry or bitter, this is sure to hit the spot. It is a really well done IPA.

Pours an opaque light orange with a thin white head. Aroma is slight fruit, pineapple, lemon, soapy hops, funky yeast. Taste is good, starts of sweet citrus transforming to a solid muddy bitterness with some pine and spicy yeast. An impressive beer, would love to get it fresh.

12oz bottle. Amber gold. Citrus and pine on the nose, some staleish caramel maltiness, bit woody. Taste is good: solid pine, spruce, and citrus-airfreshener; that jarring crystal/caramel malt comes in, hops tasting good, but that malt body is pretty flat and stale. Nice pine bitterness, really nice actually. Not an IPA to my taste, but I think this is pretty good. This was fairly fresh for an import (4 months), but maybe at 1 month those hops would've really jumped out and covered the odd maltiness.

Local trade with JBruner. Appearance was clear orangish gold with diminishing creamy white 1 finger head, rings of lacing. Aromas are orange, marmalade, pine, lemon, soft toffee, caramel malts, no alcohol. Taste are orange, soft grapefruit, lemon upfront, then soft sweet mid sip and balanced piney, fruity finish. Palate was soft smooth creamy CO2 with medium body, then lasting smooth balanced wonderful finish. A wonderful IPA, try it.

It has a rich golden colored body with a slight haze. On top there is an off white or egg shell colored head that stands up tall and hangs on well. As I drink it makes perfect clingy lace rings on the pint glass. Deep citrusy hop notes just fill my nose with some floral pine sneaking in there as well. It has a firm hop character right up front which is backed up by a nice pale malt base. The pale malt gives a good balance with out too much sweetness. This lets the hops come out and shine with loads of delicious citrusy grapefruit and mild pine like flavor notes. The hop bitterness coats the palate and slowly fades off the tongue long into the finish. It has a good medium to full body with a spot on level of carbonation.

Tasted from bottle. Pours a hazy orange amber with white head. Strange aroma at first that I didn't find to appealing that then faded. Almost a mildew type smell. Some floral bitter aroma too. Taste is much better than the aroma. Very well balanced. Nice citrusy and floral bitterness with a bready caramel malt backbone. Medium bodied. Overall a great IPA. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Solid IPA. 12 oz bottle. Pours just on the orange side of golden. Solid white head that lasts. Lots going on- grass, pine, orange, grapefruit- definitely finishes on the bitter side. Leaves mouth a bit dry. Pretty well balanced overall- hops are a nice change from the usual suspects. Simcoe one of my favorites for subtle, clean IPA flavor. Totally enjoyable.

Draught @ Akkurat. A mal dominated IPA that is way too sweet. There are also some disturbing and non fitting bready notes. Very bitter. Notes of grapefruit and herbs.
