Commercial Description:
Smuttynose IPA is a physical salute to the glory of the American hop grower. The citrusy hop flavor coming from a mixture of Simcoe and Santiams is pleasantly balanced by a smooth bitterness from the Amarillo hops. The beer itself is light bodied and crisp with a golden color that will throw a slight haze, as we bottle it unfiltered. At 65 IBU’s, this is definitely not a training-wheels IPA, but is meant for hop lovers looking to satisfy their craving in a way that’s not easy to find. We think they’ll be quite pleased.

Aroma - Orange and grapefruit right up front, stone fruit aromas underneath, some toffee as well

Appearance - Clear gold, medium white head, decent lace

Flavor - Grapefruit rind bitterness is on top of everything else, malt flavors are a little thin with light caramel and fruit flavors.

Palate - Somewhat one dimenisonal with the hops all over the place.

Overall -

On tap sampled at NFB&WF ’08 at Martha Clara Vineyards. Maybe its that it was the last beer I tried at the festival and my palate was tired, or maybe I just wasn’t crazy about this one, I’m not sure. Pours a hazy gold. Pleasant aroma of pine with some citrus notes, mostly grapefruit. The flavor is mostly bitter grapefruit and pine, with astringent hops bitterness at the finish. The bitterness lingers for about ten seconds beyond the swallow, kind of like biting into the pith of a grapefruit. I really didn’t care for this IPA.

Pours a lighter gold with a decent frothy head, that sticks around and puts up some lacing. Nose is musky, earthy hops with a solid pastry malt sweetness. Faintly piney and citrus hops battle it out for dominance while some graham cracker keeps things from going too wild. Develops quite a bitter herbal edge towards the finish though. Not exactly an easy drinking IPA, but for those who like it a little rough, this is a pretty good IPA.

Cask at GBBF 08, an incredible aroma of tropical fruit, lots of mango, papaya, guava, grapefruit and other citrus - really rather stunning. It lets itself down in the mouth however. No balance, thin body, overpowering bitterness and unfortunately very little malt gets through. A shame because the aroma, as I said, was absolutely stunning.

Cask (GBBF 2008) - Golden/amber in colour. Fresh and hoppy aroma with tangy grapefruit. Slightly watery taste. Very bitter at first with hops and grapefruit and then some biscuity malt with bitterness again featuring strongly in the finish. Not bad but the bitterness is by far the strongest feature of this beer and could do with being stronger in other areas too.

Bright orange pour with a huge, fluffy white head. Citrusy hop aroma. Flavor has orange, lemon, grapefruit and pine... a nice balanced hop profile. Malt does stand up to the ibu’s quite well. Solid and tasty brew.

12oz bottle served in a Duvel tulip. Crystal clear orange body with a nice frothy head. Smells of fresh peaches and oranges, a touch of pine. Lasting bitterness is the first impression I get of the flavor, peppery floral notes emerge after a few sips. Nice dry and refreshing body. A bit different but very enjoyable.

Clear amber with tiny off white head. Sweet aroma with hoppy and piney notes. Sweet flavor with caramel, grapefruit and hoppy not. Ends bitter.
