COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Smuttynose IPA is a physical salute to the glory of the American hop grower. The citrusy hop flavor coming from a mixture of Simcoe and Santiams is pleasantly balanced by a smooth bitterness from the Amarillo hops. The beer itself is light bodied and crisp with a golden color that will throw a slight haze, as we bottle it unfiltered. At 65 IBU’s, this is definitely not a training-wheels IPA, but is meant for hop lovers looking to satisfy their craving in a way that’s not easy to find. We think they’ll be quite pleased.

Bottle. Pours a slight reddish golden with a light cream head that dissipates quickly but leaves great lacing. Aroma is sweet composed of pine and citrus floral hops. Taste gives a quick malty sweetness followed by big hoppy flavors, mostly citrus and big hop bitterness. This is where the bottle and the tap are very different. I had this on tap the other week and it had way more malt character to it, the beer was almost dark brown with little particles suspended in it. Was really good. This is still good but not what it was on tap, still one of my favorite IPA’s.

Poured from a 12 ounce bottle into a pint glass. Appearance: Pours a medium golden color with a slight orange haze and a significant amount of sediment floating around the body of the beer. Features a 1-2 finger foamy white head. Nice head retention. Excellent lacing throughout. Smell: Very mild aroma which features floral hops up front with light hints of grapefruit and caramel. Taste: Bitter pine and grapefruit up front with a light toasted malt flavor in the middle. Bitter and dry finish. Aftertaste is reminiscent of citrus rind. Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied with a decent amount of carbonation. Drinkability: High drinkability. You could easily down a few of these in one sitting. Overall: Very good IPA. I will be buying more of these and I recommend that you do the same.

Draught at Akkurat. It poured a clear golden liquid with a small fluffy white head. It didn’t have much of any smell and I had to bury my nose in the glass to catch anything. It didn’t have much taste besides a fairly high bitterness. Dry and medum smooth mouthfeel. A decent IPA but I expected more from this beer. The flavour came after a while but it was to little to late. It might have been to old though as there was little to no hop aroma.

12 ounce bottle. A: Pours a clear amber with yeast particles floating throughout the beer (never seen this before, but looks pretty cool), with a one finger white head. S: Citrusy and piney with hop bitterness on the finish. T: Pine and a LOT of hop bitterness. The finish provides even more hoppy character. M: Light bodied with great carbonation. D: Very bitter for the style, reminds me of Stone IPA.
