Smuttynose IPA is a physical salute to the glory of the American hop grower. The citrusy hop flavor coming from a mixture of Simcoe and Santiams is pleasantly balanced by a smooth bitterness from the Amarillo hops. The beer itself is light bodied and crisp with a golden color that will throw a slight haze, as we bottle it unfiltered. At 65 IBU’s, this is definitely not a training-wheels IPA, but is meant for hop lovers looking to satisfy their craving in a way that’s not easy to find. We think they’ll be quite pleased.

Bottle at gbbf. Thanks Paul. Pours a hazy yellow with a white head. Nice, light lemon aroma. Light funky fruit too. Light body, medium carbonation. Lemon, pine, woody resin, orange marmalade... Nice dry bitter finish. Good balance. Tasty. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Keg @ Canalhouse, Nottingham. Dark gold, just a little bit hazy with some white head. Apricot and fenugreek aroma, fruity yet a bit savoury. Taste starts with a sweetness, followed by a heavy but not overbearing bitter hop flavour. Dry, almost sour, apricotty finish. This is properly pleasant stuff.

Pour from a 12oz bottle, single bottle purchased at Brookside Market in Otsego, Michigan, the Finestkind IPA alias. Medium orange/amber brew with persistent off white head. A significant amount of floaters - flat pale pasty things - poured out of the bottle and are cycling through the brew in the glass - up and down with the carbonation. They look gross so point off on appearance. Very little aroma here - it has a clean and fresh smell, almost like mineral water but not metallic, with the faintest hint of resin wafting in it. Pleasant but not much there. Taste is good for what there is - clean moderate malt at the start with a mild resinous hops emerging towards the middle and persisting to the end. A mild resin in the finish and clean sweet taste for the whole swallow. Good palate. When I saw the floaters I wondered if it was spoiled but there is nothing at all off or bad or spoiled tasting here. But this bottle may have been badly stored and the finer hops tastes may have been neutralized.... That’s speculation. What I am drinking here is a pleasant but bland ale, not something I would call an IPA. Something I could see appropriately labeled as an amber ale. And it tastes OK.

Cloudy yellow ochre with a lot of carbonation and sticky lace. The aroma is mild, buttery malt and grassy hops. Very well balanced flavor. Malt up front, then big bite in the finish. Strong resin, crisp finish, medium mouthfeel.
