COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Smuttynose IPA is a physical salute to the glory of the American hop grower. The citrusy hop flavor coming from a mixture of Simcoe and Santiams is pleasantly balanced by a smooth bitterness from the Amarillo hops. The beer itself is light bodied and crisp with a golden color that will throw a slight haze, as we bottle it unfiltered. At 65 IBU’s, this is definitely not a training-wheels IPA, but is meant for hop lovers looking to satisfy their craving in a way that’s not easy to find. We think they’ll be quite pleased.

a decent ipa. Pours amber colour with moderate head. Nose somewhat subdued for an ipa. Moderately heavy body, decent hoppiness with some citrus notes which was relatively well balanced by the sweet maltiness. OVerall not my fav but decent enough.

Aroma: Hints of bready maltiness but lots of floral and citrus hops. Appearance: Cloudy orange with minimal head and lots of sediment. Taste: Medium bitterness all the way through. Fairly one dimensional, in terms of taste, with little complexity. Palate: Medium body, slick texture, soft carbonation, long finish. Overall: It’s got that strong, hoppy IPA taste running through, but there’s just not a lot of dimension to the beer as a whole. It’s good, drinkable, and worth trying if you haven’t, but I wasn’t overwhelmed in any way by it.

Hazy golden pour with nice thick white head. I think I got an old bottle it was pretty dusty and just one sided with bitterness.

UPDATED: NOV 9, 2011 In keeping with this style I can rate this as such. aroma is spot on for an IPA, although and added bonus for the orange peel. Appearance is hazy gold. Very inviting. The taste is right on, but with many IPA’s I just get the feeling of ’feed ’em the hops’ attitude; this is slightly better thought out. I do like the orange peel notes the boldly come out. Being I am not an IPA lover I rate the palate average - with a bite and tang. I do appreciate that the alcohol is not overpowering. Generally well done. Similar to the Shoals but I will give it the Shoals a nod being a slightly more drinkable.

On tap. Hazy golden orange with a small fizzy white head. Moderate hop aroma & flavor with tropical fruit, grapefruit citrus, earthy resin, pine, and sweet caramel malt. Very balance with excellent lingering hop bitterness. A solid everyday IPA.

On draft as Finestkind IPA. Sweet, floral, citric aroma, some grapefruit and faint pine, combined with quite a bit of caramel malt sweetness. Lightly hazy light-medium amber color, head is fine and lasting. Pretty sweet maltiness dominates the flavor profile, some definite toasty malt grains and piney, tropical fruit flavors, with light brown sugar and and floral, orangey hop, the bitterness that appears towards the finish is surprisingly mild for the style. Smooth, low-moderate effervescence, medium-full body. Not bad, but pretty surprisingly sweet, to mention it yet again. Since I prefer a drier IPA most of the time, that turns out to be a bit of a negative.

Bottle. Orange pour with suspended carbonation bubbles. Awesome citrus hop nose and taste with sweet malts. Balance is tremendous and this is extremely drinkable. Wonderful beer.

Hoppy, hoppy, hoppy. Hoppy taste, smooth and not too sweet, with an incredible hoppy kick. I wish they made toothpaste this flavor.
