COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Smuttynose IPA is a physical salute to the glory of the American hop grower. The citrusy hop flavor coming from a mixture of Simcoe and Santiams is pleasantly balanced by a smooth bitterness from the Amarillo hops. The beer itself is light bodied and crisp with a golden color that will throw a slight haze, as we bottle it unfiltered. At 65 IBU’s, this is definitely not a training-wheels IPA, but is meant for hop lovers looking to satisfy their craving in a way that’s not easy to find. We think they’ll be quite pleased.

Draught at the American Craft, Brookline, MA. 6.9%.
Hazy orange golden colour with small white head. Fruity not very bitter hops, pine and malt in aroma. Grainy malty flavour with fruity piney bitter hops. Balanced.

Bottle. I only got a hint of the citrus flavors in this one and the bitterness was overpowering and lingered in the mouth for quite awhile after drinking. Not one of my favorite IPAs.

Bottle to snifter. Pours bright amber with a foamy off white head that fades to a sticky film and lacing. Aroma is clean and subtle caramel malt with no noticable hops. Taste is balanced and clean bitter hops that stand out with a smooth caramel malt. Palate is medium bodied and slick with a sticky dry finish. Very smooth and easy drinking, well pick up more!

Good beer. Great amount of balanced bitterness with the right amount of malts.

Serving: 12 oz. bottle from State Line Liquors. It pours a deep gold, almost orange color with a small, but frothy white head. The nose has big herbal and citrus notes. The flavor is starkly bitter with slight yeast notes but not much in the way of malt. A true hop head’s beer. Citrus and herbals up front with pine resin and a deep bitterness in the back.. The brew sticks with you too. Long bitter finish. Medium bodied. Nice lacing. Quality brew. If you aren’t into malt in your IPA, this is your brew. Nice.

Sampled at an ESBLS tasting held at Bigelos. A cloudy and light golden beer. A very light nose of apples. The flavor is dry and is much bigger than the aroma. Also tasted are spices, floral hops, caramel, and applesauce. The apples make this unique and interesting and it is also tasty.

The beer pours a nice hazy golden color with a great big fluffy white head and sheets of lace. The aroma displays some citrus and passionfruit, a little tiny bit of bug-spray, & some melon. The flavor is pretty hoppy with a fairly high level of bitterness. This is a pretty grapefruit centered IPA with a little bit of a bitter orange peel twist to it. Some juicy/melony hop flavors show up in the finish (which by the way is really pretty short). The malt is not hidden but not messy or annoying either, instead providing a nice crackery base for a dry well hopped ale. I like this beer quite a bit and I can understand why it gets the love that it does, I’d be pretty happy to see about 12 of these in the fridge.
