Smuttynose IPA is a physical salute to the glory of the American hop grower. The citrusy hop flavor coming from a mixture of Simcoe and Santiams is pleasantly balanced by a smooth bitterness from the Amarillo hops. The beer itself is light bodied and crisp with a golden color that will throw a slight haze, as we bottle it unfiltered. At 65 IBUís, this is definitely not a training-wheels IPA, but is meant for hop lovers looking to satisfy their craving in a way thatís not easy to find. We think theyíll be quite pleased.

Pour from a 12oz bottle, single bottle purchased at Brookside Market in Otsego, Michigan, the Finestkind IPA alias. Medium orange/amber brew with persistent off white head. A significant amount of floaters - flat pale pasty things - poured out of the bottle and are cycling through the brew in the glass - up and down with the carbonation. They look gross so point off on appearance. Very little aroma here - it has a clean and fresh smell, almost like mineral water but not metallic, with the faintest hint of resin wafting in it. Pleasant but not much there. Taste is good for what there is - clean moderate malt at the start with a mild resinous hops emerging towards the middle and persisting to the end. A mild resin in the finish and clean sweet taste for the whole swallow. Good palate. When I saw the floaters I wondered if it was spoiled but there is nothing at all off or bad or spoiled tasting here. But this bottle may have been badly stored and the finer hops tastes may have been neutralized.... Thatís speculation. What I am drinking here is a pleasant but bland ale, not something I would call an IPA. Something I could see appropriately labeled as an amber ale. And it tastes OK.

Cloudy yellow ochre with a lot of carbonation and sticky lace. The aroma is mild, buttery malt and grassy hops. Very well balanced flavor. Malt up front, then big bite in the finish. Strong resin, crisp finish, medium mouthfeel.

Bottle from StarmoreBoss, Sheffield. Hazy gold. Film of clingy white head. Fusty orange (Iím getting a lot of this, tonight. Maybe Iím getting fusty?). Itís got the Simcoe thing, too. Taste is dry, and skunky, fresh bitterness. Dry palate. Light chew. Chewy, lemon bitter finish. Decent.

355ml bottle from Redmonds. Tangerine coloured in the glass, opaque, foamy white head. Looks inviting. INteresting nose form the hops, pithy, zesty citrus notes, with a little orange and peach sweetness too. Flavour is lovely, big summer fuit sweetness followed by a blast of fruity bitterness, loads of grapefruit in the finish. Decent body, quite fizzy. Pretty complex in the finish, with the sweetness and bittnerness dueling for attention. This really is my kind of IPA.

This is a nice IPA brewed w/ the now classic combo of Simco and Amarillo hops. It is orange golden w/ a long lived head of medium bubbles that leaves nice rings of lace on the side of the glass. Despite using now common hops, the nose on this is pretty interesting. It initially has a piny almost mossy character which fades into a strong tropical fruit sweetness. The beer is actually a bit sweet once you taste it which helps emphasize this fruitiness. This is very much a full-bodied and juicy textured beer w/ fine, mild carbonation. It strikes me as just enough on the heavy side to stop it from being perfect. It finishes w/ firm citrus-rind bitterness and a lingering note of pineapple and orange. For those who love fruity hop bombs that arenít all that dry or bitter, this is sure to hit the spot. It is a really well done IPA.

Pours an opaque light orange with a thin white head. Aroma is slight fruit, pineapple, lemon, soapy hops, funky yeast. Taste is good, starts of sweet citrus transforming to a solid muddy bitterness with some pine and spicy yeast. An impressive beer, would love to get it fresh.

12oz bottle. Amber gold. Citrus and pine on the nose, some staleish caramel maltiness, bit woody. Taste is good: solid pine, spruce, and citrus-airfreshener; that jarring crystal/caramel malt comes in, hops tasting good, but that malt body is pretty flat and stale. Nice pine bitterness, really nice actually. Not an IPA to my taste, but I think this is pretty good. This was fairly fresh for an import (4 months), but maybe at 1 month those hops would've really jumped out and covered the odd maltiness.

Local trade with JBruner. Appearance was clear orangish gold with diminishing creamy white 1 finger head, rings of lacing. Aromas are orange, marmalade, pine, lemon, soft toffee, caramel malts, no alcohol. Taste are orange, soft grapefruit, lemon upfront, then soft sweet mid sip and balanced piney, fruity finish. Palate was soft smooth creamy CO2 with medium body, then lasting smooth balanced wonderful finish. A wonderful IPA, try it.
