COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Smuttynose IPA is a physical salute to the glory of the American hop grower. The citrusy hop flavor coming from a mixture of Simcoe and Santiams is pleasantly balanced by a smooth bitterness from the Amarillo hops. The beer itself is light bodied and crisp with a golden color that will throw a slight haze, as we bottle it unfiltered. At 65 IBU’s, this is definitely not a training-wheels IPA, but is meant for hop lovers looking to satisfy their craving in a way that’s not easy to find. We think they’ll be quite pleased.

Smuttynose Brewing Co. India Pale Ale ABV: 6.6% IBU: Volume: 12 fl oz Glass: pilsner Purchased at: Hopewell Valley Wine Consumed on: February 28th, 2008, 9:52 pm sensory first impression: Beautiful, thin fluffy white head, bulbous and real. Yeasty haziness, and beautiful pale gold color. Slightly active carbonation. Taste is wonderful and deep. Bright, though this came from a fridge at Hopewell, and is still unfortunately too chilled. The lace may be the best I’ve ever seen - great legs. A delicious, beautiful, affordable beer. I’m enjoying it immensely. Aroma/Olfactory: Malt has coffee tones, is rather dark and bold. Hops everywhere, and resinous. Normal hop activity in upper back roof of mouth is instead active all through the mouth with Smuttynose. What remarkable balance! Yeast/Bacteria tastes of corn, grains, and lettuce. This has a gloriously muted perfume. Caramel, cream and vanilla, but none overwhelming. Visuals/Appearance: Color is pale and yellow to golden. Liquid is quite hazy. Head/Lace white lace is outstanding and the head, while thin, stays throughout. Taste/Flavor: Maltiness/Sweetness is light. Hoppiness/Bitterness is heavy and biting. Sour is on the heavy side. Well crafted, balanced, and tasty. Palate/Tactile: Body/Mouthfeel is very full, though not stoutish. Texture is creamy, thick and satin. Carbonation average to active. Finish is wonderfully long and bitter with sweet undertones. Overall second impression: What a surprisingly wonderful beer. I had my doubts because the packaging was rather quirky, but I’m glad I took a chance. I’ll be having this again, for sure. I’d venture to say it’s in my top 5 right now.

Bottle. Pour a somewhat cloudy pale orange color with a small head that quickly fades, leaves a little webbing. Grainy and sweet aroma, sort of like a breakfast cereal. Light citrus, grassy and herbal hops too. Taste is more like hoppy pilsner than an IPA. Lots of grainy malt. Moderate sweet, light bitterness. Tastes like a citrusy/fruity cereal. Finish is a little spicy. Overall, I like it but it’s certainly not what I expected.

Bottle. Rich yellow color, white foamy average head, hops aroma, very strong bitter hoppy taste, fizzy, bitter long finish. Very very liberal use of hops I think!

12 Fl. Oz. Bottle from Dover Liquor Depot "Craft Beer Fest." Tasting. Aroma is a nice combination of hops and citrus fruits and perhaps some hints of malts. Taste is well balanced some sweetness to it but mostly a nice bitter and hoppy beer that is quite easy to drink and enjoy; very good beer.

Had this in Riga, Latvia (Alehouse) Feb 2013, made some notes, pours cloudy orange, lots of sediment in the pour, good carbonation. Bready malt aroma with citrus; grapefruit, orange. Bitter finish, good, but not fantastic.
