COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Smuttynose IPA is a physical salute to the glory of the American hop grower. The citrusy hop flavor coming from a mixture of Simcoe and Santiams is pleasantly balanced by a smooth bitterness from the Amarillo hops. The beer itself is light bodied and crisp with a golden color that will throw a slight haze, as we bottle it unfiltered. At 65 IBUís, this is definitely not a training-wheels IPA, but is meant for hop lovers looking to satisfy their craving in a way thatís not easy to find. We think theyíll be quite pleased.

Bottle. Pours a hazy straw color with a medium-thick head. Nice clean aroma of citrusy hops. The flavor is a bit less assertively hoppy, with some cereal notes and a bit of caramel character from the malts. Citrus and pine hops. A lot of sweetness on the finish, and a hint of red bean, oddly. A pretty nice IPA.

UPDATED: OCT 6, 2014 As "Finestkind IPA". 12oz bottle purchased at 5e Mondial de la BiŤre, bb04/2015. Explosive exotics in the nose: fresh orange, pineapple peel, some mango and passionfruit sweetness. Taste transports very easy lemonade citrus, mainly dried grapefruit, with some pithy bitterness and enough zest, as well as a whispy, near-chewy biscuit malt base laying down a confident mid base before the citrus rind and dried lemongrass finish. Leaves a slightly powdery bitter sensation of hop particle dust or dry yeast on the back of the tongue in the aftertaste. Overall a wonderfully balanced, fresh IPA that makes the 75 IBU a pleasure to stomache. Every beer by Smuttynose so far has been a far over par interpretation of the style. Please start exporting from the East Coast to the EUís West Coast.

Eh itís okay. I saw such hype reviews about this beer and I found myself some and was super excited to try it. Itís okay. Itís grassy. Itís honestly not that great. Iím not sure what kind of IPA they wanted to go for but if it was a grassy middle of a field weird maize bomb yeah nice job. Not much to speak of. At least in my opinion. I let this warm up, tried multiple bottles, it just didnít do it for me. Maybe others have had better luck but for me this one missed the mark, and to say "FINESTKIND IPA" on your bottle, you need to be able to back that up. Not great just average.

Bottle. Pours a deep gold with a high, large-grained, off-white lacy head. Nose is shaded much more towards orange and tangerine than your average IPA; thereís also a smoky caramel element to it thatís unusual. A little odd on the front of the tongue; saccharine notes moving into some hops bitterness with an underlying chemical or medicinal note. Not much malt to balance it, despite the color. Medicinal note stays present on the finish, which is very dry. Weird beer.

ended up falling a little flat. i am admittedly a west coast fan, but this drank more like a pale ale than any ipa. subtle hops on the nose, and more malt. some fruit and a back end slightly bitter, pretty good pale, somewhat boring ipa. disappointing wish list cross off."

Aroma: spruce, resin, flowers. Appearance: clear gold, small, creamy white head. Taste: medium sweet. Palate: fizzy carbonation, flowers and resin hops intensify, heavy sweets, light to medium bitters following, dry finish. Overall: nice IPA, intense aroma and palate. Pint at Cask Pub & Kitchen, Pimlico.

This is the "finest kind of IPA" or some other name. Make up your mind what to call your beer and fire all those people in the marketing dept. I canít smell it much after the pour because its that kind of beer. If you swirl it youíll get stink like the bottom of a smelly sock but us hop head$ love that stiky icky, donít we?! Floral hop aroma and flavor struggle to survive in this one. You may think its awesome. I think it tastes like the leftover milk from a bowl of fruity pebbles with the addition of a bitter finish dying in all that sweetness.
