EricE (281), Beltsville, Maryland, USA May 13, 2008 Opaque black pour with a light tan head. Smells just like Jack Daniels. Lots of typical port like character beneath it - chocolate and malt. Lots of bourbon flavor as well. I like Jack Daniels but I don’t really get along very well with hard alcohol. But this, this I can get behind. At first it tasted just like Jack Daniels, but as it warmed up a bit, it showed a lot more. Creamy chocolate notes as well as oaky vanilla. Very complex tasty beer! blipp (937), Grand Island, New York, USA Aug 24, 2008 Draft at Cole’s in Buffalo. Close to Black with a thin, creamy beige head. Bouron aroma with roast, vanilla, and a hint of coffee. Full, smooth body. The initial flavor is sweet bourbon, which gives way so vanilla and woody notes. The finish is long, with a very nice roasted coffee bitterness. Very good. nimbleprop (602), Washington, Washington DC, USA May 18, 2008 Sampled at Max’s Taphouse in Baltimore. Pours a deep, opaque, still, oily black with a lacing, creamy tan head. Aroma is oaky with vanilla, whiskey and sour mash. Flavor is very strong but also well rounded. The roasted malt, chocolate, nutty, coffee flavors really mesh well with the whiskey, vanilla and oak flavors from the barrels. Thick on the palate. Truly one of the better bourbon barrel beers I’ve had. jcwattsrugger (4067), Florida and, New Jersey, USA Jun 14, 2008 on tap @Blind Tiger-pours an off white head and black color. Aroma is Jack Daniels, licorice/anise, dark malt. Taste is Jack Daniels, licorice/anise, dark malt. Acidity balances the sweetness nicely. Full body. Sipping.
PilsnerPeter (1602), Flushing, New York, USA Jun 12, 2008 Tap at Blind Tiger: Near opaque pour with a fading deep brown head. Huge oaky aroma. Assertive oak presence with a nice burnt graham cracker touch, dark chocolate liqueur, booze and a light vanilla sweetness. Slick mouthfeel. Great flavor of the oak and the base Porter. Oak, bourbon qualities, vanilla hint, chocolate liqueur and a late tarry roasted finish with residual oaky tannins. This stuff is nearly a perfect marriage of Porter and oak. Nice!
