Maibocks are a traditional Teutonic seasonal specialty. We brew ours to be hugely malty and subtly finished with a variety of continental hops, with an eye-pleasing russet brown color.

Sparkling clear amber-orange body. The tan head is large and foamy. Lacing is excellent. Nice complex sweet malt nose. The flavor is very nice, complex maltiness, spicy, earthy, sweet, all that! Hops are very subdued. The palate is divine, medium-full and lively. What a nice beer. These Smutynose guys continue to impress.

Hazy, bright orange in color with a booming, solid, tan, thick and massive head. Aroma is caramel, anise and something fiery - potentially pepper. Sweet and bold to the nose. Flavor? Yes. Rich, sweet caramel paired with vanilla butter cream. Unfiltered aspect lends itself to a grainy, toasted complex. It’s somewhat of a conundrum to detail individual flavors because everything is in harmony – nice and smooth. Some jumpy hops liven things up and give a touch of bitterness. Carbonation, malts and hops are well-proportioned but equally bold. Chewy malts and big-bodied. No, better yet, this beer is fat. Finish is creamy vanilla custard and some cackled pepper here and there. Dry, caramel chew aftertaste. Smuttynose continues to impress the hell out of me. Big thanks to tpkenned for the bomber.

I feel that if the Teutonics were drinking this beer at the time, we would be missing an entire chapter of world history. This beer is so full of malt, and balanced so nicely with hops and with such an earthy aroma that if I were a Teutonic in the early times, I would sit out the Crusades under a German Poplar tree with a few of these 22 ouncers from Smuttynose in the company of a local milkmaid. The beer itself is a hazy amber with a nice head. The taste is a hair sweet but let’s not get into nerd details; this beer is a winner and to heck with the politics of the Crusades.

Amber pour with a huge white head, big malt aroma. Malty flavor with a proper amount of hops to balance it out, almost dry finish. I love it. a touch thin on the mouth feel, but other wise great.

On tap at Mile Square in Hoboken. I Really liked this beer. It was sweet and malty, with just the right amount of hops. Very drinkable. Perfect for a session.

Great thick and hearty beer. Very pale tasting heller bock. The malts were very subdued by the hops, but it was a welcomed unbalanced because the hops were very citrusy, almost like a well done IPA with much more maltyness. Beautiful orange color with orange head.

UPDATED: NOV 15, 2010 The world’s #1 heller bock/maibock, and it was not a disappointment! Interesting to look at the list - almost all the top ratings went to American releases. Can’t the Germans make a good maibock anymore? Old European drawing on the label - typical eccentric touch from Smutty. Superb sweet honey and floral aroma. Dark gold pour. A sweet, fruity, and bready brew. It has a lot of grain and hop character to stand up to the compote flavors. Unlike some other maibocks I have tried, this really tastes like a bock. Excellent - one of the best things I have tried from this brewery .

This bottle was about 6 months old at the time of this review. Pours a slightly cloudy golden color with a great looking head that laced the glass all the way down. Smells of malt. Caramel, a bit of bread, some faint hops in the background. Tastes sweet, but not cloying, properly sweet for the style. Melanoid malts, caramel, some fruit. Tastes great. Ample carbonation, medium to heavy body. Another great brew from Smuttynose.
