Cask: Special - Wetherspoon Beer festival, Spring 2012.
David Yarrington, from America’s Smuttynose Brewery, has travelled to Wadworth Brewery, in Wiltshire, to brew this beer especially for this Wetherspoon real-ale festival, taking its name from the way in which George W Bush pronounces ‘American’. This is a light mild, blending elements of Belgian, British and German brewing cultures, giving a malt profile which balances the sweet and bitter orange peel and citrus aromas, from the German hops – all superbly melded together by the British yeast used.

Cask at The White Swan, JDW, London, after seeing Jeff Mangum at Union Chapel. Pours clear gold with a foamy, white head. Pale malt nose, some toasty straw. Light sweet flavor with some light toasty grain, hay, straw and faint citrus. Light bodied with fine carbonation. Somewhat watery. Light straw bitters on the finish with light, toasty dough. Very meh. I’m a big fan of Smuttynose and this beer was a bit of a let-down.

Thought this beer did quite well. Poured nicely with a cloudy brown. The aroma was well-hopped and while it was ’mild’ -- the beer wasn’t totally nondescript. Well done.

Cask, JDW, Carlisle. Dark gold colour, soft, sweet malt on the palate. Low aroma, pleasant without being anything to write home about. Faint roast and grain on the back of the throat, with some metallic notes coming through.

Mild spicy aroma which is quite interesting. Fairly characterless in the mouth however. Rather thin in the malt arena and as a result seems distinctly lacking in body.

Cask conditioned handpump Eastgate Northampton. A copper coloured beer with a tight white head. An interesting caramelly light mild feel to this with decent lemony hop notes too. A bit of sherbert. Interesting and intriguing. Quite nice.

Cask, Corn Exchange, Leicester. Golden with a firm white foam. Aromas are light cereal with apple squash and mellow oranges. Soft spices with some floral notes. Flavours are weak apple squash with biscuit malts. Some herbal and floral notes. Dry on the finish. This beer just didn’t grab my palate at all. Disappointing.
