Aroma of pine hop and wood smoke. As black as it claims to be. Taste is bitter dark roast coffee with some lactic hints here and there. Long roast malt aftertaste. Heavy but not thick really, it is nice and filling.

[5312-20130429] Tap. Roasted orange rind malt aroma. Clear, red-hued black body with a huge long-lasting creamy tan head. Mild grainy citrus grain flavour has an underlying cardboard bitter grains. Medium body. Interesting to sample. (8/4/7-/3/14) 3.6

Poured from 12oz bottle, pours pitch black with a thick light tan head and sticky lacing through out the entire glass, aroma has a good amount of citrus and pine with a kick of chocolate as well, flavor is of more roast and chocolate on the front end with some pine and hops in the finish, pretty solid.

Appearance: The body is pitch black with small tan sediment chunks at the bottom. The head is tall, dense and very firm with a khaki hue.
Aroma: The aroma has mild pine and roasted malts with a hint of chocolate. Decent balance and a nice aroma profile but I find it to be weak.
Taste: The flavor is just mute through the taste until the mid/end. There’s literally nothing on the intro that I pick up. Even by the mid there’s not much that stands out. Hints of malty sweetness, some roast, some pine. Overall very very tame. Not bad, but tame. Hints of burnt malts linger.
Palate: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation.
Overall: I wish that this were bolder. This is a great beer to put a few back, but it doesn’t excite much when dissected.

Bottle. Pours dark brown with a creamy to frothy beige head that thins quickly leaving a fine ring and excellent lace. Nose of pine, floral and sweet citrus. Lightly sweet and medium bitter taste with a light body, thin chewy texture, average carbonation and a short bitter finish.

Bottle Best By 08/04/14. Nose is nice and raw, heavily burnt with plenty of tar and deep roast, some ash, just the way I likes ’em! Some mild grapefruit and citric hops, some Black Sun Stout comparables. Pours dark mahogany (no, not black) with a dense, rocky tan head. Taste medium-strongly bitter but more importantly extremely dry, with little bits of ash and tobacco and tar and mild chocolate and resin entering and leaving, but it’s bone dry and nearly astringent all the way through the aftertaste. Piny, woody hops with faint citrus but still remain somewhat bright. Medium body but the intensity of roast makes it seem fuller. Clean and very well made, alcohol mostly concealed, and a great example of what attention to a unified plan can deliver, instead of kitchen-sinking piles of leftover ingredients.

12oz bottle from Crossroads Spirits. Pours black with a creamy dark tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, roasted coffee, and pine. Taste of roasted malt, burnt toast, pine, and an aftertaste of toffee. Solid beer.

Decent black ipa, smooth with cocoa notes, dark brown pour, medium to low bitterness.

Black pour, full creamy head the color of coffee heavy with milk. Aroma is roasted malt and grassy hops. Slight tangerine. Flavor is surprisingly light up front. Not much sweetness at all. Everything is backloaded into roasted malt and hop bitterness. Grassy resins hops provide strong bitter foundation. Malt is there but lacking in depth a bit. A little astringent at times. Some cream and peanut butter. Palate is smooth and creamy. I always find this to be a weird style that is rare to pull off gracefully. This one is pretty decent but displays the problems frequently found in the style. Hops and dark malts often clash. Still enjoyable, though.

Pours black with brown edges and a fair khaki-mocha head that settles to a thicker ring and leaves some soapy, splotchy lace. Nose involves some mild coffee roast notes, some refreshing pine, dark chocolate, hints of herbs and mint, some tropical fruit lurking underneath. Fairly sweet, plenty bitter. Medium bodied, oily and slick, fair carb, with a lengthy hoppy and roasted bitter finish. Very tasty, lots to like all around. Not earth shattering, but well executed. Will satisfy anyone’s hankering for a Cascadian/Escondidan/Green Mountain Dark Ale.
