COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Black IPA doesnít quite seem to make sense, does it? How can something thatís black also be described as pale? Noonan is our interpretation of a New England original, the Black IPA. Dark like a porter, but hoppy like an IPA, this seemingly contradictory beer style originated in 1994, in Burlington, Vermont by brewer Glenn Walters and under the watchful eye of Greg Noonan. Greg was many things, a brewing pioneer and author, founder of three brewpubs, 2005 Russell Scherer award winner and genealogist. When Greg passed away suddenly, Smuttynoseís brewing team wanted to brew a beer in his memory and this was the result. We hope you find it a worthy tribute as well. Noonan (the beer) looks like an ordinary porter or stout, until you get the pint up to your nose. You canít avoid the big whiff of piney, herbal and citrusy American hops, but thereís virtually no roasted character. Ponderous, huh? When you take a sip, youíll notice that the beer doesnít taste a lot like a porter either. Instead of the expected astringency imparted by dark grains, youíll find a depth of caramel malts and more American hops. Donít worry thatís by design; itís also what we love about the beer.

Scrapersnbeer (1439) - Boston, Massachusetts, USA - APR 14, 2013
Aroma of pine hop and wood smoke. As black as it claims to be. Taste is bitter dark roast coffee with some lactic hints here and there. Long roast malt aftertaste. Heavy but not thick really, it is nice and filling.

ContemplateBeer (1438) - Louisville, Kentucky, USA - MAR 22, 2014
Aroma: Moderate pine meets a respectable dark chocolate/roasted malt backbone; a little citrus creeps in under the radar. Appearance: Unfiltered jet black with a big, billowy mocha head that settles into a rocky cap. Flavor: Piney/slight citrus hops pave the way for a mid-palate that yields a bit more to chocolate/light roast; the pine re-establishes itís dominance toward the finish; leaving a lingering bitterness. Palate: Medium body, creamy texture, soft carbonation, bitter finish. Overall: Put me on the boat with those who donít dig this style overall, but this is a good representation.

Bottle. Dark brown with a tall tan head. Roasted malt aroma, medium body, plenty of bitterness. Well rounded complex beer.

chinchill (1389) - South Carolina, USA - APR 23, 2013
On tap at Growlers Pour House in Charlotte. Pours is near black; slightly dark even for style, with an above average tan head that leaves a fine coat on the glass when tilted. Smell is more dark malt than hops, but this tastes like it should: i.e., an IPA with ample dark roasted malts. Unlike the aroma, in tasting these two ingredients mesh better, and are in better balance than in some other black IPAs. M: slightly harsh; medium body and carbonation. O: Aroma lacks IPA hoppiness, but the taste is true to style.

Pours a black color with a tan head. Aroma is of citrus hops, caramel and slight chocolate and roasted malts. Flavor is strong up front of the chocolate and roasted malts. Has a decent, bitter finish as well from the citrus hops.

zizzybalubba (1318) - Elizabeth City, North Carolina, USA - MAY 13, 2013
12 oz. bottle from SoHo Organic Market, Elizabeth City, NC (listed as 5.7% ABV on the bottle). Dark brown, almost black, pour with a frothy khaki head. Aroma of light smoke, dark chocolate, floral hops, and light citrus. Beautiful marriage of the grapefruit and piney hops along with the chocolate and smoke. There is a bitterness on the front that almost melts away with the wonderful dark roasted malt flavor on the finish. Very nicely done.

DCLawyer (1312) - Falls Church, Virginia, USA - APR 12, 2013
Bottle->shaker. Black with thick tan head. Aroma: malt and hops, good balance with nothing standing out over another. Taste has a hop bite, bitter and smoky.

keanex (1290) - Atco, New Jersey, USA - MAR 6, 2014
Best before August 4, 2014.
Appearance: The body is pitch black with small tan sediment chunks at the bottom. The head is tall, dense and very firm with a khaki hue.
Aroma: The aroma has mild pine and roasted malts with a hint of chocolate. Decent balance and a nice aroma profile but I find it to be weak.
Taste: The flavor is just mute through the taste until the mid/end. Thereís literally nothing on the intro that I pick up. Even by the mid thereís not much that stands out. Hints of malty sweetness, some roast, some pine. Overall very very tame. Not bad, but tame. Hints of burnt malts linger.
Palate: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation.
Overall: I wish that this were bolder. This is a great beer to put a few back, but it doesnít excite much when dissected.

Bottle. Wine Warehouse. Charlottesville. Pours dark brown with an inch of tan head. Laces nicely. Smells of luscious tropical hops. Smooth piney hops and grapefruit peel in the mouth. Lovely.

Bottle. Pours an opaque dark brown with a creamy light tan head. Aroma is sweet chocolate and citrus with a roast character. Flavor is dry, semi-sweet with a strong bitter finish. Somewhat thin, highly carbonated. Good, potently flavored brew.
