COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Black IPA doesnít quite seem to make sense, does it? How can something thatís black also be described as pale? Noonan is our interpretation of a New England original, the Black IPA. Dark like a porter, but hoppy like an IPA, this seemingly contradictory beer style originated in 1994, in Burlington, Vermont by brewer Glenn Walters and under the watchful eye of Greg Noonan. Greg was many things, a brewing pioneer and author, founder of three brewpubs, 2005 Russell Scherer award winner and genealogist. When Greg passed away suddenly, Smuttynoseís brewing team wanted to brew a beer in his memory and this was the result. We hope you find it a worthy tribute as well. Noonan (the beer) looks like an ordinary porter or stout, until you get the pint up to your nose. You canít avoid the big whiff of piney, herbal and citrusy American hops, but thereís virtually no roasted character. Ponderous, huh? When you take a sip, youíll notice that the beer doesnít taste a lot like a porter either. Instead of the expected astringency imparted by dark grains, youíll find a depth of caramel malts and more American hops. Donít worry thatís by design; itís also what we love about the beer.

MadRobin (2659) - Silver Spring, Alabama, USA - APR 23, 2014
Poured from 12 oz. bottle. Opaque, brown-black with a 1 to 2-finger tan head and excellent lacing. Aroma of roasted malt, coffee, chocolate, pine, grapefruit, toffee and floral hops. Lots of malt and roastiness with plenty of blended in such that the individual hop aromas tend to blend together. Taste of roasted malt, pine, chocolate, coffee, toffee and grapefruit. Lots roastiness and malt balanced by strong hop flavors. Medium/light body and medium/high carbonation. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Cask ta GBBF. Black body offwhite head. Lots of berries and piney hops in aroma. Slight roastiness too. Quite nice black IPA. Easy for one, I think.

Bottle. Moderate to heavy toasted cereal for the malt, pine and resin for the hops, faint soap for the yeast, with hints of wood and charcoal. Head is small, fizzy, lightly brown with fair lacing and is mostly diminishing. Color is very dark brown. Flavor starts faintly sweet and lightly acidic, then the long finish is lightly acidic and lightly to moderately bitter. Palate is on the fuller side of medium, watery with a lively carbonation. A really nice Black IPA with great balance between malt and hops.

durhambeer (2500) - Durham, North Carolina, USA - MAY 2, 2013
Bottle from the great Samís Quik Shop in Durham. Pours a dark brown, nearly black with a soft light tan head and good lacing. Nose is more roasty malt than hops, though some light pine and orange peel notes make their way through. Taste adds hop bitterness, but this is definitely more of a malt-forward black IPA than some, for the better.

Bottle pours deep amber, thin tan head with a thick lacing coat. Nose is of light roast and some citrus. Taste has strong bitterness, not much from the malts and a heavy presnce of citrus that lingers on the finish. Body is medium. I wish there was a bit more presence from the malts. If you did not look at it youíd think it was just another ho hum IPA.

GBBF. Cask.
Black as hell, residual-froathy tan-beige head. Hoppy, citrussy aroma, resin and some grapefruit combined with a roasted character, licorice. Roasted character in the flavor, citrus and licorice taste, light resiny-grassy hop

Bottle from Garden City. Dark dark brown with lasting tan head and lace. fresh hop and roasted coffee aroma. Very mild sweet mocha with subdued dark fruity sweetness and very dry assertive roasty woody hop finish. Nice medium sessionable palate with enough carbo to accentuate the hops. Excellent.
