COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This limited release, short batch beer is a Black IPA brewed in memory of Greg Noonan, founder of the Vermont Pub and Brewery and Russell Scherer Award winner. The VPB created the first documented black IPA in the mid 90’s, so we’ve brewed this beer as a tribute to a true craft brewing pioneer.

GBBF. Cask. Opaque black beer, residual tan head. Light dry palate. Nice mild malt backbone. Pokey green piney hops. Super fresh hop nettley sting - grassy and pretty bitter. Real fresh hop attack. Dry finish. Nice Black IPA.

Cask at GBBF 2011. Black with a small tan head. Fresh hoppy aroma of citrus and grass with a touch of licorice. Citrus and licorice flavour with a somewhat rough grassy hop bitterness, otherwise a very tasty beer

Fresh bottle from Premier Gourmet. Spot on black IPA, emphasizing the roast and yet still citrus hop supporting it. Above average mouthfeel. Good drinkability. Not the best black IPA I have had, still well crafted and worth trying. Dry finish.

Cask at GBBF 2011, Day 2. Pours opaque brown with a bubbly, tan head. Big, raw hop aroma, pine, slight roast. Medium sweet flavor, plenty of bitterness, notes of citrus and earth, dark roasted malts. Has a bit of a raw edginess to it, which I like. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Sticky, resinous hop finish, some floral character, more grass and pine. Lingering pine, roast and oily hops. Great stuff.

12 ounce bottle from Beer Run. Pours a clear dark brown color with a thin dark brown head. Decent head retention. Aroma of chocolate, roasted malts, coffee, herbal and pine hops. The taste is bitter resin hops, leafyness, some green notes, bitter roast and coffee with chocolate in the finish. Medium bodied.

2013-04-29. Mahogany tinged black body, nice creamy tan head. Aroma is mild, light dusty malt with mild leafy green hop character. Flavour is pleasant, modest dry malt, light leafy green hops. Earthy leafy hops linger in the finish. Very smooth average bodied palate, pleasant soft carbonation. Enjoyable, surprisingly mild for a black IPA but quite drinkable. On tap at Farmhouse, Burlington

In short: A pleasant chocolaty and herbal/piney hoppy dark ale. Good beer.
How: Tap at Black Back Pub, Waterbury VT
The look: Near black body topped by a small dark beige head
In long: The hoppy nose is very herbal with some floral and piney notes as well as some roast. Taste is round and chocolaty (chocolate cake senation), some molasses, tree bark. Plenty of hops here, herbal and piney hops, juicy and slightly resinous. Feels generously dry hopped. Bitterness of medium intensity. Full body with medium carbonation. Overall this was a good Black IPA, maybe a bit too on the herbal side for me but very enjoyable nonetheless. Another New-England beer that is a tribute to the late Greg Noonan. When I die no commercial product will be named after me, however my death will probably lead to the addition of a warning label on a common household product, like “Warning: Not for human consumption” on tv remotes.
