Black IPA doesnít quite seem to make sense, does it? How can something thatís black also be described as pale? Noonan is our interpretation of a New England original, the Black IPA. Dark like a porter, but hoppy like an IPA, this seemingly contradictory beer style originated in 1994, in Burlington, Vermont by brewer Glenn Walters and under the watchful eye of Greg Noonan. Greg was many things, a brewing pioneer and author, founder of three brewpubs, 2005 Russell Scherer award winner and genealogist. When Greg passed away suddenly, Smuttynoseís brewing team wanted to brew a beer in his memory and this was the result. We hope you find it a worthy tribute as well. Noonan (the beer) looks like an ordinary porter or stout, until you get the pint up to your nose. You canít avoid the big whiff of piney, herbal and citrusy American hops, but thereís virtually no roasted character. Ponderous, huh? When you take a sip, youíll notice that the beer doesnít taste a lot like a porter either. Instead of the expected astringency imparted by dark grains, youíll find a depth of caramel malts and more American hops. Donít worry thatís by design; itís also what we love about the beer.

Deep copper pour with ample tan head. Aroma of citrus and pine with underlying notes of roasted grain and coffee. Really bitter hop upfront that gives way to a creamy finish. There are melding tastes of sweet and bitter; dark chocolate, biscuity grains, caramel, citrus, pine. The taste is all over the place, but comes together well. Good beer, but I still havenít warmed up too much to the black IPAs.

Sampled at AOT Wilmington. Poured a black almost brown. One finger white head. Aroma of roasted malt and hop, wheat and coffee. Smooth character, medium bitterness, clean palate. Still roasted character.

Bottle. This beer was named in memory of Greg Noonan, one of the co-creators of the first black IPA and an influential dude in the New England beer community. The beerís dead black at the thicker parts of the glass; clearer milk chocolate hues at the the thinner parts. One full inch of sticky, marshmallow-fluff tan foam sits atop. Enticing aroma. A background of smooth cocoa is accented by notes of orange peel, anise, sweet lactose and chocolate-covered pomegranate. More porter than black IPA, I think. Roast is big, with a flavor of burnt wheat bread. Orange peel, fresh grass and a touch of pine make up the hoppy side. The finish is mostly malt, and very dry. Crazy-balanced. Nice body, medium and velvet-smooth, almost creamy. Moderate carbonation prickles the tongue and breaks the brew into a few soapy bubbles. Bitterness is noticeable, but not out of line. Tasty.

Black pour with a brown head. Aroma is roasted malt and fruity hops. Taste is a nice balance of roasted malt and hops. One of the best black ipaís in my opinion. Great lacing shown on each sip.

A nearly, black pour with a tan head and some sediment. The aroma has pine and lemon with a hint caramel. It has a medium body with somewhat slick texture and lively carbonation. The taste is bitter with a roasted finish.

12 Fl. Oz. Bottle. Poured dark brown with a nice tan foamy head and lots of lacing on the glass. Aroma of roasted malts and hops. Taste of grassy hops over some roasted malts, some cocoa and coffee notes. Nice beer enjoyable and drinkable.

Bottle. 1st pour went a little too fast I guess. It was 80% thick tan head. Took a bit to regress to the a dark opaque brown with a thick tan lacing clinging to the sides. Aroma of hops intermingled with roasted malts. Taste almost exactly the same as the nose but the malts taste almost burnt and lingering bitterness.

Dark pour, one finger head with pretty good lacing. Milky aroma with some citrus. The flavor was caramel malts with roast...like a brown ale, almost. Mild citrus hops. Very mild on all fronts, but a nice chalky mouthfeel. Pretty easy drinking for a black IPA. Good job.

Bottle. Orange, mint, pine, chocolate and some coffee in the nose. Cloudy matte black color. Flavors of pine resin, coffee, roast, some smoke. Decent, not all that sweet.
