COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Black IPA doesnít quite seem to make sense, does it? How can something thatís black also be described as pale? Noonan is our interpretation of a New England original, the Black IPA. Dark like a porter, but hoppy like an IPA, this seemingly contradictory beer style originated in 1994, in Burlington, Vermont by brewer Glenn Walters and under the watchful eye of Greg Noonan. Greg was many things, a brewing pioneer and author, founder of three brewpubs, 2005 Russell Scherer award winner and genealogist. When Greg passed away suddenly, Smuttynoseís brewing team wanted to brew a beer in his memory and this was the result. We hope you find it a worthy tribute as well. Noonan (the beer) looks like an ordinary porter or stout, until you get the pint up to your nose. You canít avoid the big whiff of piney, herbal and citrusy American hops, but thereís virtually no roasted character. Ponderous, huh? When you take a sip, youíll notice that the beer doesnít taste a lot like a porter either. Instead of the expected astringency imparted by dark grains, youíll find a depth of caramel malts and more American hops. Donít worry thatís by design; itís also what we love about the beer.

Growler from Big Z Beverage. Pours black with a thin tan head. Aroma of citrus, light fruits, apple skins, wood, and a hint of roasted malt. Flavor is sweet initially with lots of dark, roasted malty notes in the finish. More akin to a hoppy imperial stout (or even a hoppier Rochefort 10) in the flavor actually with dark fruits, chocolate, sweet malt, and citrusy hops. Lots of complexity in this beer, more than most of your typical black IPAs. This is a great black IPA, maltier than most. 8/4/8/4/16 [4.0/5]

12oz bottle. Amber-black body, with a big, frothy, beige head. Crisp chocolate edged aroma, pretty nice. Respectable citrus hop tones and a hefty malt backbone to balance it out....and balanced it is. One of the more enjoyable Black IPAs Iíve had. Dry, sticky bitter aftertaste. Great chocolate, caramel, graham cracker flavors. Solid offering, would be great to go back and forth between this and their regular IPA.

Pours a deep rich black color with a two finger khaki foam. Big roasty nose with touches of earthy forest floor and bright grassy pine hops. The palate follows the nose nicely with great mouthfeel and spot on flavors. Great black IPA !

Pours pitch black with a slightly tan head. Aroma is a mix of roasted malt and hops. Taste is a good balance between the malt and hops. After taste is very bitter, the hops certainly take over.

Medium size, khaki colored head atop a dark brown body left good lacing. Toasted malt aroma with hints of tobacco and resin. Woodsy, smoky taste offset by the pine and citrus flavors of the hops. Medium bodied, nicely carbonated mouthfeel with a lingering finish and bittersweet aftertaste. Does a good job of balancing the dark malts and hoppiness emblematic of this style.

Pours black with brown edges and a fair khaki-mocha head that settles to a thicker ring and leaves some soapy, splotchy lace. Nose involves some mild coffee roast notes, some refreshing pine, dark chocolate, hints of herbs and mint, some tropical fruit lurking underneath. Fairly sweet, plenty bitter. Medium bodied, oily and slick, fair carb, with a lengthy hoppy and roasted bitter finish. Very tasty, lots to like all around. Not earth shattering, but well executed. Will satisfy anyoneís hankering for a Cascadian/Escondidan/Green Mountain Dark Ale.

(bottle) Pours dark brown with thick, lasting and creamy tan head. Woodsy aroma of pine, roasted malt and yeast. The flavor is piney hops balanced with toasty malt. Big rings of glass lacing with each sip. Long finish. Well crafted.

Another winner from Smuttynose. Very nice complex palate. Right amount of hops and malt. Very enjoyable, a must try for IPA lovers

Entered to celebrate my 7800th Rating. Cask @ GBBF, 2011. Pours black with small bubbles on top. Pine, grapefruit and vague roast. Freshly hopped and smooth. A bit of caramel. Very nice.

On tap at Portsmouth Gaslight during the Smuttynose tap takeover. Pours deepest, darkest brown, almost black with a 1 finger head that retains well and laces nicely. Roasted malt and pine hop aroma. Flavor is a well balanced combination of the malt and pine hop. Neither overpowers the other. Even get a hint of chocolate from time to time. The finish is quite bitter with coffee ground notes. Moderate in body with enough carbonation to keep the tongue interested. Theres a smoothness to it that makes it easy to drink.
