Great aroma. Nuts, caramel, smoked woods, roasted chocolate. Nice hazy brown looks, good head, thin lace. Good in mouth, Med sweet, med bitter with good amount of hops to keep it together. Soft carb, long finish with a decent med body. A tad oily.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Draft at a coffeeshop in Manhattan. Billed as a nut brown there for some reason. Smooth caramel and stronger malts, strong full flavors of souring grain. Not my favorite style, nor a great example of it.

3.2 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
12oz bottle. Nice label. Brown color, opaque, no lacing, small head. Nice warm taste, moderately bitter, with a long finish, loooong. Moderately bitter, still not a perfect balance, I canít tell whatís missing though. Drinkable, different enough to be worth a try. Kind of blander than i was expecting.

I love this beer; itís probably my favorite beer classified on RateBeer as a brown ale. Itís moderately hoppy without being overwhelming, and it seems to achieve a balance that Iíd like...relatively dry for a brown ale, not as much as some stouts but enough that itís refreshing. Seems pretty complex too. I became a huge fan of this beer when I live in CT and it was pretty widely available; here in PA I drink it less only because itís less available. Itís described as full-bodied but to me, in spite of its high ABV, this beer has a certain lightness to it, perhaps because itís a little less sweet.

UPDATED: OCT 22, 2013 Brown ales were a gateway into craft beer for me. Over time, my palate has changed but Old Brown Dog remains one of my favorites and a fine example of the American style.

pours clear light brown with a small light beige head, little retention and lacing. fruity and nutty caramel malts, toasty crunchiness and gentle roastiness, bit of dry caramel and earth, grass and bitter herbs. moderate to low carbonation, light body - tad watery, short but present earthy-grassy-spicy finish. meh.

16 oz. draft at the Big E in West Springfield, MA. Dark mohagany pour with an off white head and good lacing. Smell is nut, caramel, roasted malt and hops. Taste is similar, sweet with a touch of hops. A caramel sweetness lingers. Good brown ale, though pretty standard.

From bottle good hazy brown color light off white head. Nice smooth balanced taste.......improved as it as it warmed up. Not spectacular but much better with more character than many brown ales.

This is my "cheater" beer - it pairs amazingly well with absolutely anything you might grill. Great balance of malts and hops and a good flavor that doesnít overwhelm or leave you wishing for more. If thereís a BBQ, cookout, or summer get-together, this is the first thing I reach for.
